The Portfolio Controller will be responsible for overseeing a team of Senior Property Accountants. This position is based in Chicago, IL.
Primary Responsibilities: •Review, investigate and correct inconsistencies in journal entries, general ledger accounts and financial reports •Complete monthly and quarterly joint venture level consolidations •Supervise accounting staff members •Review financial information/reports for accuracy and completeness •Review monthly property financial statement variance analysis; complete fund level monthly financial statement variance analysis to be presented to executive management •Oversee the preparation of quarterly lender reporting deliverables •Review and approve journal entries •Monitor and ensure compliance with corporate internal control processes •Maintain timely communication with management, keeping them apprised of all material financial and reporting issues •Lead the annual audits of the property and joint venture financial statements •Must be a flexible team player with ability to lead or participate in other projects/tasks as assigned •Perform special projects and ad hoc analysis, as needed
THE CANDIDATE The successful candidate will have a strong background in general ledger processing, budgeting and forecasting. Experience within the real estate industry is required.
Education: •Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required; CPA preferred •7 years of experience in real estate accounting
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: •Experience performing a monthly close process •Experience independently managing projects through completion •Experience researching, analyzing and reporting financial information in a clear and concise manner •Experience managing a team •Must be a flexible team player with the ability to lead and participate in other projects/tasks as assigned •Strong knowledge of GAAP •Excellent analytical and problem solving skills •Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, management and external firms •Working knowledge of accounting processes and internal controls •Professional and proactive •Strong organizational skills, deadline focused and ability to meet deadlines •Past experience with accounting software required; JD Edwards and TM1 experience preferred •Strong Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook skills required •Minimum 3 year of supervisory experience
