Custodian S03 – Lab of Ornithology
Lab of Ornithology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Perform comprehensive custodial maintenance and event support duties for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Ornithology complex includes the Johnson Center, a state of the art research, museum and public facility consisting of 92,000 GSF, and the Ornithology Maintenance Building that houses a shop, equipment storage, and a research service area and shop totaling 6,400 GSF. The incumbent will be one of three team members responsible for cleaning assigned areas following established procedures and in accordance with departmental needs and standards. These duties may include, but are not limited to: mopping, stripping and waxing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets; spot cleaning walls and baseboards; dusting, including light fixtures and HVAC vents & diffusers; washing windows and glass display cases; cleaning & disinfecting toilets, urinals and sinks; filling towel and soap dispensers; cleaning whiteboards; cleaning & disinfecting water fountains; emptying general trash, non-hazardous-non-infectious lab trash and recyclables ensuring that all guidelines and protocols are followed.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to setting up facility-owned or rented tables, chairs, risers, podium, portable PA system, and Audio/Visual systems as required for events. Assist with snow and ice removal when necessary. Clean staff kitchen appliances, refrigerators and microwaves. Act as the first line of response (following outlined emergency contact procedures) for any building emergencies that arise during absence of supervisor, facilities coordinator or Senior Director of Administration. Responsible for maintaining open and respectful communications with custodial team and supervisor. Participate in team meetings, relevant training and meet regularly with supervisor to review activities and provide feedback.
Serve as one of the three team members responsible for the safe transport of faculty, staff, and students between campus and the Lab of Ornithology via the Lab shuttle. 3 to 5 shuttle runs are provided Monday through Friday throughout the day during the academic year. Serve as one of three team members who receive, sort and deliver all incoming packages via Federal Express, UPS and USPS.
The schedule for this position is 1:00pm to 9:30pm, Monday through Thursday; 1:00pm to 8:30pm on Friday. Some weekend work and weekly schedules may fluctuate depending on special event will be required based on event schedules. All custodians participate in working special events on a rotational basis.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Ability to read, understand and communicate in English.
Prior custodial and event set up experience of at least one to two years.
Must have a record of excellent attendance and dependability.
Proven ability to learn new tasks quickly and work well independently and as part of a team.
Experience with and knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment and methods including floor scrubbers, polishers, and vacuums.
Experience maintaining various floor finishes.
Ability to resolve questions and accomplish most tasks under general supervision.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record; must be able to drive standard transmission and cargo vehicles.
Obtain and maintain Large Van Driver Training certification through CU Fleet Garage.
Demonstrated ability to operate related power equipment.
Ability to lift 75 pounds and to climb/work comfortably and safely on an 8'stepladder.
Ability to assume responsibility and to respond appropriately in emergency situations in the absence of supervisor and/or after normal business hours.
Proven ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others and build good working relationships to solve problems and achieve common goals.
Strive at all times to be diplomatic and courteous.
Must be able to work a regular afternoon shift, 1:00pm to 9:30PM; occasional shift changes may be necessary to cover events, etc., weekends and evenings when necessary, some of which will be overtime.
Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
Illustrate a proven track record of successfully providing exceptional customer service.
Ability to work well with others while creating a high-quality and respectful work environment.
Related experience or ability to learn within 60 to 90 days A/V and/or video teleconferencing equipment (set up operation, and basic troubleshooting) and computer knowledgeable of Power Point, Word, and electronic mail and calendar systems.
Prior experience with mailroom distribution duties. Knowledge of the campus and community.
