General Summary/basic PURPOSE OF JOB: The Chief Engineer is responsible for the operational management and effective daily leadership and administration of the engineering team with the objectives of safely, efficiently, and effectively operating machinery and systems in a cost-effective manner. All work to be performed in compliance with local and state codes. Incumbents are subject callback as required by the hospital.
Essential Functions and duties
Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency and Hospital directives related to building operations and work safety.
Leads operations, assigns work orders, and/or provides technical and procedural training of coworkers and subcontractors.
Arranges for subcontractors as needed.
Assists in formulating, implementing and overseeing a preventive maintenance program to ensure that Hospital machinery and systems meet or exceed their rated life.
Monitors Hospital systems including fire alarms, HVAC, electrical and plumbing to ensure operation of equipment is within design capabilities and achieves optimal environmental conditions.
Oversees and inspects the work performed by engineering staff.
Determines that work is complete, equipment is fully functional and Hospital space is in prime working condition.
Responds quickly to emergency situations, coordinating additional assistance as needed.
Insures the availability of an adequate inventory of tools and other supplies to operate the Hospital.
Specific duties include but are not limited to: preparing and submitting purchase orders requests, developing sources for stock materials and performing periodic checks of inventory levels and equipment conditions.
Performs and/or directs the performance of all departmental work requests, insuring that work performed in these areas is accomplished efficiently with a minimum amount of disruption and inconvenience. It is also followed up with adequate clean up.
Checks malfunctioning equipment and ascertains corrective action required to restore to satisfactory operating condition.
Contributes to a positive work climate and the overall team effort of the department.
Is in compliance with Mount Sinai Hospital Attendance Standards.
Performs related responsibilities as required or directed
MINIMUM Education: Skill and proficiency to read, write and perform mathematical calculations and measurements as normally acquired through official completion of high school or its equivalent. Knowledge of building construction, renovation and repair and in depth knowledge of the operation of miscellaneous electrical, HVAC/R systems, plumbing, etc. as normally acquired through completion of technical high school courses and/or vocational school courses. MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: Five years’ experience in similar environment, including supervisory experience. Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures and of hospital operation and air conditioning systems as normally acquired through 3 months on-the-job training.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:Have working knowledge of local, state and national regulations. Ability to communicate with Department Heads and Supervisors to exchange information, schedule work, secure information, and provide advice and information on frequent basis. Work requires operation or use of the following tools/equipment: standard hand or electrically operated tools, specialized plumbing tools, construction equipment and other portable tools.
REQUIRED LICENSES, Certificates, Registrations: Maintains valid Driver’s license. Compliant with PPD requirements. Must have a current City of Chicago Stationary Engineer’s License.
