UC Santa Cruz Physical Planning, Development & Operations - Engineering Services is looking for a licensed, experienced engineering professional to operate independently in planning, design, construction and commissioning phases of medium scale to large scale capital construction projects on our campuses. The successful candidate will also perform design engineering work for projects of limited scope, and help improve design and performance of physical infrastructure and building engineering systems. Demonstration of good judgment is key in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining solutions.
The projects may be new construction or alterations including work inside buildings, site work and exterior utilities. Project scope may include architectural, civil, mechanical, electrical and landscape. Project management assignments will typically be from project inception through completion. Responsibilities may include: 1) the conceptual phase of engineering studies, defining initial scope and budget, setting design criteria, obtaining project approvals 2) the design phase of managing the A&E design consultants, coordinating stakeholder input, design reviews, compiling bid documents, budget reconciliation, value engineering, and obtaining final approvals 3) the construction phase of soliciting bids, awarding contracts, schedule management, submittal review, project meetings, utility shut down coordination, inspections, progress reports, payment review, change order negotiations, budget management, start up, commissioning, and contract close out including warranty work.
Job emphasis will be on achieving engineering systems that meet the functional design requirements, are reliable, easily maintained, energy efficient, have low visual impact, and have a long operating life. Turnover of fully functioning engineering systems to campus operation personnel (Physical Plant) is a high priority.

UC Santa Cruz Engineering Services is an instrumental part of campus Physical Planning, Development and Operations group. We function in support of Environmental Planning, Construction Services, Physical Plant Operations, Sustainability Office and Real Estate Office. Our clients are comprised of members of the entire campus community including academic research, teaching, students, housing, transportation, business, administration and all support organizations. Our staff members are professionals in fields of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, project management, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
We strive to provide the most cost effective, energy efficient solution to a given engineering problem or need. We develop engineering scope, schedule and budget for building and infrastructure systems while evaluating options to meet the goals of capacity, reliability and sustainability. We develop and maintain campus standards for building and infrastructure systems. We evaluate national, state and local code, UC Policy and campus standards compliance of construction projects. We coordinate needs and opportunities for new construction, alterations, deferred maintenance, system upgrades and master planning of campus utility infrastructure systems in support of the UC Santa Cruz academic and research mission.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Ability to work outdoors for long periods, work in enclosed, restricted environments, to climb a ladder
Occasionally support night, evening, weekend, holiday commissioning and shutdown work.
Five years engineering experience including two years of responsible design work.
Professional engineering license in the state of California is required.
LEED Professional Accreditation.
Training in building codes, in particular: California Electrical Code, California Mechanical Code, California Plumbing Code, California Energy Code (Title 24), the California Fire Code and the California Green Building Code. ICC or IAPMO Certification as applicable.
Knowledge associated with the planning, design, construction of engineering systems.
Knowledge of construction procedures in general, applicable building codes and regulations.
Experience in providing engineering analysis and engineering design services, administering engineering office work, and managing and administering construction projects of varying size and complexity.
Ability to manage with minimal supervision all phases of design and construction projects, including programming, budgeting, design, preparation of construction documents, contract administration, construction supervision and inspection.
Ability to anticipate and coordinate shutdowns of critical systems so as to minimize impacts to multi-building campus operations.
