University of Maryland Baltimore is currently seeking a Technical Trades Manager for Department of Facilities Management. The selected candidate oversees and coordinates administrative and technical operations associated with one of the following technical trade specialties: HVAC. Responsible for daily operational functions, supervision of staff, quality control and emergency management.

Serves as technical expert and manages the daily operations of the technical trade specialty. Responsible for developing and creating unit goals and objectives.
Plans, supervises, and coordinates the activities of assigned personnel in the specialty trade. Provides technical expertise and guidance to the staff. Provides training to staff in work methods, use of tools and equipment and relevant safety precautions. Participates in performance evaluations and hiring; recommends areas for individual training and development.
Reads, interprets and works from blueprints, drawings, schematics and specifications.
Oversees and recommends changes to the internal operating procedures.
Schedules and coordinates activities with the user departments and divisions. Assesses needs and technical requests. Ensures the timely completion of forecasted and preventive maintenance programs.
Responds to inquiries and complaints from the user departments.
Provides visual inspection and quality control by monitoring project progress. Ensures compliance with projected results, codes, regulations, and requested standards.
Examines and inspects work progress, equipment and work sites to verify safety and to ensure that specifications are met. Recommends special work or necessary equipment maintenance/upgrades/designs/purchases.
Estimates material and worker requirements to complete job. Assist in budget projections, budget preparation and departmental planning for area of responsibility. Monitors work activities and expenditures to control costs.
Ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are maintained for the area; initiates and/or prepares documentation related to purchase transactions; recommends and supervises vendors; oversees the ordering process.
Evaluates emergency service needs that arise during shift to determine level of action required. Determines strategy and provides follow-up with management in affected area. When necessary, serves as working supervisor to meet the demands and needs of the situation.
Researches and recommends applications of new operational methods, techniques and equipment.
Participates in developing, implementing and evaluation work processes, systems and procedures to achieve University goals, objectives, and work standards.
Provides day-to-day leadership and works with staff to ensure a high performance, customer oriented work environment and support for achieving the mission of the University and the department.
May participate in long-term planning to assess future needs that achieve the mission of the department.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED.
Maryland State Licensure in technical trade specialty area (Licensed HVAC Mechanic).
8 years of progressively responsible related experience with 4 years of experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity

Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, schematics and specifications.
Knowledge of relevant regulations regarding specialty area (such as OSHA regulations).
Familiar with the concepts, practices, and procedures in the field.
Ability to translate technical requests into designs, charts, sketches, and/or diagrams of specialized equipment.
Skills in leadership, coaching, and teambuilding to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
Ability to analyze, compare and interpret facts and make sound judgments.
Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects in order to meet established goals and objectives.
Skill in continuously seeking to improve the quality of services and processes.

Ability to execute specific functions for the position.
Possesses knowledge and skills for relevant trade-specific software packages.
Ability to exert force up to 70lbs, work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions as well as the ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
