The primary purpose of this position is to perform the full range of journey work duties in the HVAC trade i.e., maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace the heating, ventilation, air conditioning equipment, and refrigeration equipment and control systems on all campus buildings. He/she has primary responsibility for installation, modification, adjustment, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC, refrigeration, and instrumentation used in building automation systems. These systems consist of computer operated hardware with remote processors, and field devices, interconnected to provide transfer of information and remote operation and control of a large number of components, i.e. valves, dampers, VAV boxes, air compressors, etc. The position also services equipment such as solid state motor starters, variable speed drives, and electronic controls. Work performance is reviewed by inspection of completed work for quality and compliance with project plans and specifications and departmental work orders.

The primary purpose of the Facilities Services Department is to maintain and improve the physical plant of the Campuses of East Carolina University. This includes the central utility plants; heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems (including various tonnage chiller units with associated equipment); electrical distribution systems (including emergency electrical power generating equipment as well as medium voltage distribution system); domestic hot and cold water systems; laboratory vacuum systems; ultrapure water systems; medical gas and vacuum systems; compressed air systems; natural gas distribution systems; fire protection systems (including fire pumps, wet suppression systems, fixed chemical systems, and portable fire extinguishers); fire detection and alarm systems (to include True Site TSW Workstation, Fire Alarm Control Panels, and mass communication systems); steam distribution systems; irrigation systems; sanitary sewer systems; and storm sewer systems. It also includes repairs and renovations to buildings and infrastructure.
