The UVA Office for Sustainability is seeking an Energy and Sustainability Engineering Specialist to contribute to developing solutions to meet university-wide goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and overall environmental stewardship. The incumbent focuses on supporting innovative projects that incorporate best practices in sustainability and conservation in the use of energy, water, and other resources through retro-commissioning, energy audits and technical analyses. The incumbent supports the goals of providing consistent, cost-effective, and efficient use of energy and other natural resources by applying expertise and knowledge of building systems to inspect, evaluate, analyze, and solve complex building mechanical, electrical, controls, and plumbing deficiencies. The Energy and Sustainability Engineering Specialist will also support new construction and major renovations as a project stakeholder for sustainability.
Required Minimum Level of Education: *Degree Required
Required Specific Degree/Training: A Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, sustainable design, computer science, math, physics or similar field.
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required Specific Experience: With an Engineering degree, a minimum of 2 years' professional experience working in an engineering-related field, designing, constructing, or evaluating building energy systems or controls is required. A degree in any of the other above fields, will require a minimum of three years' professional experience working in an engineering-related field, designing, constructing, or evaluating building energy systems or controls.
Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Considerable - 4 to 7 years
Preferred Specific Experience: Minimum of four years experience with HVAC and controls design or project management.
Preferred License or Certification: Certification/registration as a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Accredited Professional, CEM (Certified Energy Manager), Engineering in Training or ability to become registered as a Professional Engineer is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 1. Excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, schedule, track, and manage multiple projects exclusively. 2. Demonstrated ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds. 3. Ability to employ analytical, communication and teamwork skills to influence outcomes. 4. Technical knowledge of or background in operations and maintenance of engineering principles and systems, including HVAC/mechanical systems or controls. 5. Strong analytical skills with the ability to determine actionable projects that achieve results. 6. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interface and develop relationships with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public to promote and educate on sustainability initiatives. 7. Ability to manage multiple projects to meet overarching objectives. 8. Keen eye for quality control and attention to detail. 9. Collaborative, innovative and solutions-oriented. 10.Knowledge of the LEED certification process for new and existing buildings 11. Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with and engage diverse groups.
