As a service and maintenance department of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station located in Geneva, NY, the responsibility of the Buildings and Properties Unit (B & P) is to provide responsive maintenance, engineering and special services in support of our institution's vital research. The mission is to maintain and expand the campus and its facilities to the highest possible standards, while providing dependable and cost effective support services to those carrying out the research. B & P is a service organization dedicated to the success and satisfaction of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station's faculty, academics, staff, students and campus visitors.
Under general supervision, working as a member of the Buildings and Properties Unit tasked with maintenance of the physical plant at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, support Lead Maintenance Mechanic in the performance of a variety of routine and non-routine maintenance tasks, modifications and projects for Cornell University's off campus research facilities located across the State of New York. Perform multi-discipline maintenance activities which will include carpentry, masonry, electric, plumbing, painting and other general building and facility related maintenance. Purchase materials and supplies as needed to accomplish duties. Interface with staff, faculty and vendors regarding areas of responsibility. Maintain work orders and work requests as well as preparing estimates. Participate in the evaluation of building systems, conduct and document facility condition assessments, advising Crew Leader of deficiencies. Assist in the development of maintenance plans for each facility to identify preventative, routine and planned maintenance activities.
Extensive travel required with this position.

24 hour availability required for emergencies on an as-needed basis
Remote Maintenance Mechanic Specific
Formal training beyond a high school diploma of 1 to 2 years of college coursework in Building Trades –Construction, or trade associations training, with more than 2 years' experience in construction trades
Must have a strong working knowledge of carpentry, masonry, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and experience performing hands on work with these systems, with ability to use numerous tools and equipment for maintenance and repair
Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics
Must undergo a successful driving background check and be able to pass a DOT physical
Maintenance Mechanic III Specific
Must have a core competency in one of the construction or maintenance disciplines (plumbing, electric, carpentry, refrigeration, controls, painting, or masonry)
Ability to work independently to perform routine maintenance, repairs, and replacements
Operate and maintain trades equipment; strategically select most appropriate equipment to complete task; evaluate condition of equipment
Must be able to wear safety equipment such as a respirator
Maintain required knowledge of applicable safety and code compliance regulations and requirements
Respond to work orders and requests to perform maintenance activities
Identify necessary parts and supplies needed to complete a task and work with shop lead to develop plan or procurement
Provide relief for Utility Plant operators and assist other trade shops
Support other functional groups as required to fulfill mission of organization
Five years of related experience in technical trades or facilities. AAS degree in a technical discipline or tech school certification
