Position summary: Perform assigned duties associated with one of the following trades: carpentry, electrical, mechanical, HVAC/R, painting, plumbing, etc. to assist with the general maintenance, upkeep, and repair of campus buildings, dormitories, and grounds; display demonstrated knowledge and skill in the above mentioned trades. General purpose: Serve as a knowledgeable resource in at least one of the building trades for the Facilities Management Department and provide high quality building maintenance and repair services in support of the mission of the college.
Major role functions: • Prioritize and execute repair/work orders daily, following up as needed to ensure high quality work • Helps mentor and train Maintenance Technicians I and II • Thorough familiarity with all MICA buildings’ systems and installed equipment; conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, both independently and with a contractor • Acts as the Facilities Management “construction representative” for construction/repair projects; monitor the work and conducts quality control for hired maintenance/repair contractors for quality and work completion • Required to lift, carry, push or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials; reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and crouch to gain access to spaces, and may involve both indoor and outside work and the use of hand tools and power tools associated with the building trades
Position responsibilities: • Assist with the setup and preparation for events, classes, visitors, etc.; classroom/studio/gallery/exhibit space set-up and break down; move objects, furniture, trash, etc. from buildings to various locations • Oversee, monitor, or check the work of Maintenance Technicians I and II when needed • Act as the Facilities Management primary point of contact if working on the second shift; occasional assignment as the Facilities Contact on Duty person for after-hours emergencies • Take corrective action for any deficiency related to the campus buildings and grounds • Perform unsupervised building interior and exterior maintenance/repairs • Learn through formalized and on-the-job training to become proficient in at least one building trade • Help maintain Facilities vehicles and keep the maintenance shop clean and organized • Assist with enforcing environmental health and safety rules and regulations throughout the campus • Establish and maintain good working and professional relationships with MICA faculty, staff and community • Maintain good housekeeping habits • Work to reduce energy usage, reduce or recycle waste, and promote sustainability • Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, skills and abilities: • Ability to work in a team oriented environment • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision, or as part of a team; demonstrated ability to lead a team on the completion of a project • Ability to work well and cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds • Ability to solve problems and think through solutions related to building maintenance and repair • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
Minimum qualifications: • High school diploma or equivalent • Formal post-secondary training/apprenticeship AND certification in plumbing, electrical, HVAC/R, or carpentry • Proven practical work experience and knowledge in plumbing, electrical, HVAC/R, or carpentry • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and basic safety requirements; working knowledge of environmental health and safety; must set the example in following safety rules, operating instructions and procedure manuals • Extensive knowledge of hand tools, power tools and equipment associated with maintenance trades • Ability to perform basic math as well as read, write, and speak English to understand and communicate written/verbal instructions • Willing to learn through job experience and formal training • Must be a leader in working to maintain interior and exterior campus buildings & grounds
Valued but not required qualifications: • Formal post-secondary training/apprenticeship AND certification in multiple building trades • Knowledgeable in facilities management software • Foreman, supervisory, or facilities management experience • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
Reporting to this position: No direct reports Conditions of Employment: • Candidate must successfully complete a full background check. • Works primarily indoors, but occasionally outdoors year-round • Will occasionally be required to lift and/or move heavy objects • Available to work different shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed • Ability to work in various climatic conditions and around materials typically used in the making of works of art (e.g., clay, ceramics dust, fibers, wood shop areas, printmaking, painting, sculpture, drawing mediums, etc.) • This position is an “essential personnel,” meaning the attendance for snow removal and other 24-hour emergency response availability, and presence for campus emergencies is mandatory • Ability to stand for long periods of time
