The Director of Nursing for the Ambulatory Surgery Center in Department of Surgery is a Registered Professional Nurse who provides leadership, direction and oversight for the Ambulatory Surgery Center in the Department of Surgery. The Ambulatory Surgery’s Director of Nursing’s oversight ensures safe, competent, and quality care based on nursing theory and research to patients recovering from ambulatory surgery. The RN Director leads continuous quality and process improvement initiatives, is responsible for patient satisfaction, physician relations, financial performance and growth and employee engagement within the Ambulatory Surgery Center. He/she will report primarily to the Vice Chair of Administration of the Department and the Chief of Nursing for the Mount Sinai Health System.
1.Responsible for managing a two room article-28 accredited ambulatory surgical unit.
2.Responsible for increasing OR case volume and ensuring full utilization of the OR rooms
3.Ensure all OR’s are properly equipped and stocked for each case.
4.Responsible for collaborating with Revenue Cycle Departmental leadership to monitor and grow revenue cycle activity as it pertains to the Ambulatory Surgery facility. This includes ensuring all charges are captured and entered, claim denials are appealed and managed, and oversight of all billing staff/agencies.
5.Responsible to work with Revenue Cycle team on all payor related issues for the Ambulatory Surgery facility, including meeting with senior level representatives to mitigate any payment issues
6.Responsible to ensure that all revenue growth targets are achieved on an annual basis
7.Responsible to ensure that the unit expenses are effectively managed on an annual basis
8.Oversees all front end operations, including surgical booking and scheduling
9.Works closely with the surgeons to accommodate their special requirements when coming to operate within the facility
10.Responsible to oversee all central sterile processes within the facility, and work closely with the main hospital central sterile department
11.Ensures a close relationship with the senior leadership of the main operating rooms for case coordination and to help handle possible overflow
12.Responsible to ensure unit remains 100% compliant for Article 28 certification
13.Ensure that all facility related issues (e.g. HVAC, Mechanical, Environmental, etc.) are managed on a daily basis so the facility is in optimal condition at all times for surgeons, staff, and patients
14.Responsible for all materials management for the Ambulatory Surgery Unit
15.Manage all business development activities for the Ambulatory Surgery Suites
16.Responsible to work with Departmental marketing leadership on marketing initiatives for the Ambulatory Surgery Suites, including creation, and distribution of materials both print and online
17.Responsible to participate in negotiation of all managed care contracts, and renewals of contracts with insurance carriers for the Ambulatory Surgery Suites
18.Responsible to work with Departmental Administration to negotiate all vendor related contracts for equipment, supplies, and materials.
19.Enhances all patient satisfaction scores, and ensure Ambulatory Surgery Suites exceed 90% overall.
20.Develops, implements and monitors quality improvement initiatives to enhance and streamline current procedures/ processes.
21.Establishes and ensures that overall objectives relating to consistency of quality standards and customers service are met.
22.Collaborates with other departmental leaders to drive modifications and enforcement of system standards and guidelines across facilities to increase operational performance.
23.Collaborate with Finance in the preparation, review and approval of annual budgets.
24.Monitors financial performance: review and approve monthly financials consistent with the business plan and annual budget and develops strategies and plans to address any variances.
25.Monitors unit expenses and implements cost reduction and efficiency improvement initiatives.
26.Plans and leads staffing initiatives including recruitment supervision, evaluation and development of staff.
27.Participate in significant department initiatives. Maintain collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues.
28.Manages new accreditation processes—specifically the Article 28 process, joint commission accreditation process application, survey and eligibility process. Manages Medicare 855B application and process.
29.Actively supports and holds team accountable for survey readiness, ensuring current knowledge and compliance with federal state and local regulatory, licensing and accrediting requirement changes affecting areas of responsibility monitors survey readiness on a regular basis, implementing corrective actions as needed.
30.Assists in development, implementation, and evaluation of standards of care and professional practice in collaboration with members of the health care team and in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory agency requirements.
31.Maintain quality assurance system including; review, statistical trending, requesting follow up for repeated problem occurrence, monitoring thoroughness of QA completion, and filing.
32.Assesses and evaluates patient needs for, and responses to, care rendered and applies sound nursing judgment in patient care management decisions.
33.Research and compile information relevant to any incident reports. Submits all adverse event reports and leads root cause analysis.
34.Maintain records of ASC quality assurance reports in order to monitor compliance, report content, incident frequency and follow up activity.
35.Conducts the staff in-services and QA meetings as requested. Participates in ASC team conferences and staff meetings.
36.Provides direct, continuous, (where applicable), care for a specific caseload of patients through application of the nursing process based upon theory, research, and approved Department of Nursing and institutional standards.
37.Coordinates patient care activities, based on established priorities, including teaching, counseling, and discharge planning, and directs/delegates appropriately to members of the health care team.
38.Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, significant others, and members of the health care team about the patient's plan of care.
39.Participates in the design, measurement, and assessment of care related structures, processes, and outcomes to improve the quality of patient care.

Will be responsible to maximize revenue and minimize expenses for the Amb Surg unit.
Performs other related duties
Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing. Master’s preferred.
Minimum of 3-5 years of OR experience, and 1-2 years of OR Management experience. Additional PACU experience preferred.
Current Registered Nurse license in New York State.
Maintain current BCLS.
Should have a basic understanding of Microsoft suite, PACS, Lab systems, EMR systems such as EPIC
