Posting Summary: Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of U.Va.'s buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
The Operations Department has an opening for a Meter Technician who supports the department's goal of providing reliable and accurate utilities metering & accounting/billing data at the University facilities by installing, troubleshooting, and repairing various types of meters and analyzing meter and building data related to utility billing. The incumbent diagnoses and repairs, electronic and/or electro-mechanical equipment, but not to the component level. The Meter Technician installs and calibrates meters and equipment according to specified standards; removes and replaces parts, sub-assemblies and assemblies; configures/ programs meters, and keeps accurate records. Schematic drawings are used as reference for some diagnostic and repair work. The employee also programs and configures meter definitions using various software tools.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required with a minimum of four (4) years' experience in installing, repairing, or maintain utility services such as steam or hot water, electric service, chilled water or potable water with two (2) years of experience as a licensed journeyman is required. An HVAC, plumbing, or electrical trades license or Certified Controls Systems Technician certification (CCST), as well as a valid driver's license with a positive points balance is also required. Demonstrated technical skills to diagnose and resolve issues using test equipment and problem-solving is a necessity. Strong verbal, written, record keeping (repairs/installations) and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate information in a professional manner is essential. Demonstrated ability to use computers/laptops as well as working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) is required. The incumbent must also have the ability to work overtime which could include nights and weekends and the ability to respond on an emergency basis as needed. Experience with Process Instrumentation, Arc Flash training, and/or Confined space training is strongly preferred. Experience programming or configuring meter outputs into building automation systems (BAS, Metasys, WebCTRL, Tracer, etc) and using those systems to troubleshoot or identify meter anomalies, as well as experience with utility billing systems is strongly desired. An ability to read blueprints and ability to use electronic test equipment such as calibration devices and multi-meters is also preferred.
