The George Mason University Office of Housing and Residence Life (OHRL) invites applications for a Maintenance Assistant position; positions are available for both day and evening positions. The Maintenance Assistant, under supervision, performs general/preventative maintenance services as directed within the campus housing system.
Repairs electrical systems, outlets and cords;
Installs motors and belts, as needed;
Responds to all electrical request, as needed; and
Performs preventative maintenance on electrical equipment, as scheduled.
Repairs overflowing and clogged toilets, and unclogs showers and sinks;
Repairs valves, gaskets and lines (this includes, but is not limited to: water, sewer, steam and condensate lines);
Responds to all requests for plumbing service, as directed; and
Performs preventative maintenance on plumbing equipment, as scheduled.
Performs preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, as scheduled.
Performs carpentry repairs on doors, door hardware, windows, walls, shelving, and other carpentry repairs as needed.
Patching, caulking, priming, staining, and painting ceilings, walls, doors, windows, and other items as needed.
General Building Maintenance:
Responds to building issues and resident requests for basic building needs, including but not limited to: exterior building maintenance, light bulb replacement, tile, other floor coverings installation, etc.;
Inspects residential facilities and equipment to ascertain required repairs and reports discrepancies; and
Reports all matters of safety to the appropriate supervisor.
High school education and specialized training with significant related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience indicating proficiency in the preceding knowledge and abilities;
General knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting/wall repairs, and installation as needed;
Valid driver's license with a good driving record, and must be insurable;
Ability to practice effective oral communication skills with students, faculty and staff;
Ability to read, understand, and abide by all safety policies and procedures and follow equipment and system manuals; and
Due to frequent verbal contact, candidates should command the English language.
Preference is provided for candidates with prior residential university or multiresidential community maintenance experience.
The incumbent of this position is considered an essential employee for OHRL in regards to severe weather; and is subject to recall after hours in the event of campus emergencies, disasters, or other special needs as directed by management. The individual may be required to perform snow and ice removal and is required to work on a periodic rotating basis to ensure evening and weekend coverage.
Salary: $38,251 annually plus benefits.
