Campus Engineering & Operations has an outstanding opportunity for an HVAC Control Technician to perform journey-level work in the operation, inspection, testing, servicing and maintenance of mechanical, pneumatic, electronic and direct digital controls (DDC) for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) of the complex building systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve operation and maintenance problems of complex building environmental control systems that are both pneumatic and DDC.
Install, modify, diagnose, test, repair, calibrate and operate a variety of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic equipment in HVAC systems
Perform alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment.
Suggest operation strategies for campus HVAC systems to ensure continuous and reliable service.
Respond to emergency situations such as HVAC outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property, damage to research activities, and disruption to life-safety systems.
Perform the work in accordance with applicable safety rules and environmental regulatory requirements and maintain records as required according to environmental requirements.
Work with other trades to troubleshoot and repair system failures related to all aspects of the HVAC equipment and systems.
Work with the preventive maintenance program on equipment, components, and systems. Assist with record keeping for the preventive maintenance program of the environmental control systems.
Maintain and update system schematics through red line system changes and create if necessary, mechanical, pneumatic, and DDC system schematics.
Participate in and follow through with CEO process improvement initiatives (Balanced Scorecard, Lean, Ideas Systems).
Comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including the use of personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the supervisor.
Work with Campus Engineering, Capital Projects Office, contractors, Facilities Services trades, building occupants, and other clients as necessary for scheduled and planned required work.
Operate a variety of hand and power tools.
Operate vehicles such as University vans and trucks to transport tools and equipment to various worksites.

Completion of a four-year approved institution course as a Control Technician Trainee;
OR four years of applicable experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic control systems.
Vocational or trade school training in control mechanisms may be substituted, year-for-year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years.
Experience working with complex building environmental control systems, a wide variety of systems, and in the repair, service, maintenance, and operations of equipment, components, and systems.
Ability to read and interpret blue prints related to building HVAC systems.
Have possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license recognized by the State of Washington and have a good driving record.
Must be strong team player and must be able to work independently and as a team member.
Possess excellent skills in building a working crew harmony.
Must possess excellent customer service, written and oral communication skills. Must be able to communicate appropriately with clients, staff and students to present a professional image.
Must be conversant with at least one of the following DDC control systems: Johnson Controls Metasys (PMI or ADS/ADX), Siemens Apogee, Alerton (IBEX or BACtalk).
Experience in basic desktop computer skills, maintenance work request and work order programs.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Five or more years of experience, as an HVAC control technician working with complex building and laboratory environmental control systems, with a wide variety of systems and in the repair, service, maintenance, and operations of equipment, components, systems and etc.
Experience with fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets.
Have experience working independently as an HVAC control technician for a licensed HVAC contractor or as an employee of a public agency.
Detailed knowledge in working with the DDC systems from Johnson Controls, Siemens and Alerton.
Demonstrated ability to work with clients during building ventilation system shutdowns and inconveniences.
Ability to work independently to improvise necessary system component repairs.

The position requires working with asbestos containing equipment, following proper procedures.
This position requires the wearing of personal protective equipment appropriate to the job task. And with the proper personal protective equipment, work in animal research areas. Additionally, approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee's expense and worn on the job.
The position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and occasionally scheduled overtime. Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours.
A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas.
Appointment to this position is contingent upon obtaining satisfactory results from a criminal background check.
