Under direction of the Director of Operations at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, responsible for all aspects of facilities maintenance for the Aquarium. Participate as a member of the Aquarium leadership with all Aquarium department heads. Oversee all aspects of plumbing systems, carpentry and electrical requirements, pumps, etc. Supervise building maintenance and contract custodial staff. Ensure continuous routine and specialized upkeep of facility including painting, carpeting, flooring, door hardware, etc. Design and implement installation of special aquarium equipment and life support systems. Coordinate with UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) maintenance staff and outside contractors for major repairs. Serve as liaison with UCSD's Facilities Design and Construction (FD&C) and Facilities Maintenance offices. Work with Aquarium and Campus leadership to develop plans for new exhibits, deferred maintenance and Aquarium expansion. Review proposed plans and architectural drawings, assess feasibility and ensure proposed plans meet the aquarium's needs. Work with FD&C and planning representatives to determine and recommend cost-saving measures and cost effective procedures for aquarium projects. Responsible for long-term budgeting for all aspects of facilities management and staffing. Responsible for planning of preventative maintenance and execution of modifications to the facility, or supervision of such when performed by outside sources. Responsible for all purchasing conducted by facilities maintenance unit, including building materials for improvements. Responsible for safety and security of facility, related to on-site visitors and after-hours security and staffing. Respond to emergency situations involving seawater, plumbing, electrical and other potentially hazardous conditions. Coordinate multi-unit needs, addressing capabilities and limitations of the facility and staffing, ensuring the safety and security of the patrons during numerous promotions, events, and exhibits. Develop RFP's for services, such as cusdodial services and manage contracts.
Willingness to ensure full 16-hour coverage of the facility for maintenance and security purposes, and special events, even when required to cover swing or graveyard shifts personally without advance notice.
Experience managing a facilites opeartion at an aquarium or similar venue.
Experience with seawater systems, including plastic piping, pumps, filters, valves,compressed air, and heat exchangers. Ability to design and install above systems.
Expert knowledge and experience in surfacing materials and finishes including surface preparation, painting, floor coverings and tile, window coverings, sealants, varnishes and other clear coatings, weatherproofing treatments, etc.
Experience in plumbing, including design, selection and installation of plumbing systems to be used in conjunction with seawater systems, as well as domestic water systems.
Expert knowledge and experience in carpentry, cabinetry, and fabrication utilizing solid surfacing materials, to create custom components for the facility.
Ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints and complete work according to specifications therein.
Experience in electrical cabling and wiring, including telecommunications wiring and Category 5 computer network wiring.
Expertise to use, and instruct others in the proper use of hand and power tools; ability to choose and maintain tools. Knowledge of all related safety requirements. Ability to oversee and ensure a safe shop area and worksites. Knowledge of specialized tools and machinery specific to museum or hospitality applications.
Ability to assess the capacities and limitations of the facility, communicate above to heads of various units and/or contacts for various promotions or projects in order to coordinate project logistics and ensure optimal use of facility.
Ability to supervise effectively. Ability to make good hiring decisions. Effectively supervise personnel who are on-site temporarily as workers for a variety of agencies including custodial and grounds-keeping.
Strong organizational skills. Ability to keep thorough, accurate records and to archive building information including plans, blueprints, vendor histories, etc.
