The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington is a nationally ranked education and research program. The Department of Electrical Engineering currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3-Field Service Engineer in the UW NNCI Washington Nanofabrication Facility. The Field Service Engineer will be responsible for equipment troubleshooting and baseline process monitoring as well as facilities infrastructure monitoring and support.
Specifically, the person in this role will:
Work with other facility staff and users to ensure machines are performing to specifications.
Work directly with local researchers, including university staff and students as well as industrial users, to support their nanofabrication research needs through process development, as well as equipment and processing training and support.
Assume primary responsibility for several pieces of complex equipment used in nanofabrication, including but not limited to photolithography, dry etching, thin-film deposition, and inspection and analysis. Responsibilities of tool ownership include preventative maintenance, system documentation and training, and user support.
Establish performance requirements for nanofabrication processes and evaluate performance metrics.
Mentor staff members. Be cross-trained and provide secondary support on other equipment in the cleanroom.
Streamline training and assessment protocols to expedite qualified user progression.
Provide regular monitoring and oversight of critical building infrastructure support systems including HVAC, process gas delivery, and deionized water generation/distribution.
Coordination of consumables inventory and cleanroom cleaning and validation protocols.
Work will be primarily within the Fluke Hall cleanroom facility, and will involve hands-on work with complex microprocessing equipment, delicate samples, chemicals, compressed gasses.
Bachelor's degree in technical field required (Engineering or physical sciences). Master's preferred. Equivalent years of experience may be considered as well.
At least 3 years working experience with micro and nanofabrication equipment, preferably in a multi- user, multi-disciplinary research-oriented facility.
Significant experience working in a cleanroom environment
Working knowledge of vacuum systems
Working knowledge of hazardous materials handling and emergency response procedures
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Substantial equipment maintenance and troubleshooting background, including high-vacuum processing equipment.
Experience with a wide range of nanofabrication processes desired, including deposition, etch, lithography, metrology and inspection equipment.
Ability to plan and execute complex projects such as wafer processing projects, process development and characterization, or equipment installation.
Background in mechanical systems.
Background in cleanroom and critical building support infrastructure systems including HVAC, process gasses, and deionized water generation/distribution.
