SUMMARY: Takes the lead in carrying out varied types of plumbing work involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings and systems. Ensures that work is done in compliance with local, state or national codes as appropriate. Directs other mechanics and helpers
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1.Installs, repairs, and maintains pipe assemblies, piping systems, plumbing fixtures, regulators, valves, pumps, and other types of plumbing, heating, and steamfitting fixtures, fittings and appliances.
2.Covers piping and fittings with insulation or other composition.
3.Maintains water, drainage, waste, and gas lines in good working order; makes emergency plumbing and steamfitting repairs.
4.Installs, repairs, and/or maintains water, gas, oil, waste disposal, and high pressure steam pipes and facilities; installs, repairs and maintains furnaces and boilers, steam tables, autoclaves and similar equipment; works with wrought iron, cast iron, soil, glass composition and copper pipe; installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot, compression and soldered joints.
5.Removes stoppage from waste pipes, water closets, soil stacks, and house drains and prevents water wastage by repairing and/or replacing worn plumbing and steamfitting parts.
6.Is familiar with the nomenclature, use and installation of reducing, pressure relief, surge, check, float, gate globe, and thermostatically controlled valves, union, sleeves, bushings, reducers, steam traps, dirt strainers, and other fittings appliance.
7.Requisitions, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials and supplies. Makes time and material estimates.
8.Works from sketches, plans, and specifications and roughing-in sheets in accordance with the plumbing code or approved trade practices. Reads blueprints, diagrams and equipment specifications.
9.Attends training sessions as required.
10.Inspects and tests work in progress and completed work.
11.Keeps records of equipment, materials used, work done and time spent.
12.As required, may assign, layout and guide plumbing work for Trades Helpers and Mechanics.
13.Keeps work areas clean and orderly.
14.Performs other Facility related duties as required, which may include, but are not limited to snow removal and/or other related facility duties.
15.Understands and adheres to Rowan SOM compliance standards as they appear in Rowan SOM Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
16.Must possess and maintain a valid driver?s license.
17.Complies with legacy attendance policies of Rowan SOM and Facilities Operations and Plant Management in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
18.Interacts with persons of all ages in a diverse, multicultural environment with respect and consideration.
19.Performs final check and clean up at end of shift.
20.Performance must exhibit good customer service skills and teambuilding by cultivating and maintaining rapport with customers and co-workers.
21.Presents a clean uniform appearance.
22.Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, experience, and/or ability required. Technical school diploma or equivalent level of knowledge plus a minimum of five years of progressively more responsible experience as a plumber in an educational, industrial or health care facility. Thorough knowledge of local, state and national codes. Must have a valid driver?s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires the individual to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and climb or balance up to 2/3 of the time; to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, to talk or hear and to taste or smell less than 1/3 of the time; to lift a weight or exert force from 10 to 25 pounds up to 2/3 of the time, from 50 pounds to over 100 pounds less than 1/3 of the time. Ability to perform physical labor without restrictions, including lifting equipment in excess of fifty (50) pounds, performing work on roofs, scaffolding and ladders. The position requires close, distance and color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception as well as the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The individual in this position may be exposed to environmental conditions such as wet or humid conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat or cold (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and vibration up to 2/3 of the time; to risk of radiation less than 1/3 of the time. Moderate noise is typical for the work environment of this job.
