Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities and Exhibits Technician is responsible for day-to-day facilities and maintenance of the Museum, as well as meeting and event production (set-up & take down). This position is also responsible for maintaining the function and appearance of the Museum’s permanent and changing exhibitions, and participating in the fabrication of new exhibit elements. This is a full-time, non-exempt position.
Perform basic maintenance/repair of all buildings and grounds.
Adhere to opening and closing security procedures.
Execute program, event, and festival production, including set-up and teardown.
Perform janitorial duties.
Create and follow maintenance schedules and checklists with supervisor.
Repair and provide preventative maintenance for all exhibits (i.e., mechanical, graphic, and environmental/scenic components, expendable exhibit supplies) to ensure visitor satisfaction.
Provide scheduled and emergency exhibit maintenance.
Assist with installation and removal of temporary and permanent exhibits.
Assist with fabrication of new interactive exhibits and/or prototypes.
Assist in the production and fabrication of signage using Adobe software and vinyl plotter.
Maintain marine animal tanks; order supplies and work with contractors as necessary.
Log and update status of ongoing job/project orders from museum staff using Helpdesk ticketing system.
Help ensure general shop safety and serviceability and proper use of tools and equipment by participating in shop maintenance tasks as appropriate.
Attend and participate in weekly exhibits team and exhibits content meetings.
At least once a month, serve as designated Duty Officer to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
Work with outside vendors and contractors as needed to maintain exhibit supplies.
Assure a safe site for children and families, staff and volunteers.
Respond to site issues and requests in a timely manner.
Maintain flexibility of schedule to provide support for all site programs as well as for Facilities and Exhibits department vacation and sick time coverage.
Other duties as required or assigned by Facilities Manager, Exhibit Manager, or Senior Manager of Facilities.
Skill and aptitude in carpentry, scenic painting, plumbing, mechanical/electrical devices, metal and plastics fabrication.
Demonstrated experience with hand and power tools.
Working knowledge of fabrication equipment such as a vinyl plotter, laser cutter, 3D printer, and CNC router.
Proficiency in design software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, preferred.
Knowledge of and adherence to tool and shop safety.
