This position has responsibility of preparation, maintenance and support of research, forestry, and facility projects, often working closely with research scientists and other technicians.
TYPICAL TASKS (These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this class.)
Regular, On-going tasks
Assists in the preparation and maintenance of experimental research plots. This includes, but not limited to, mowing, discing, fencing, or cultivating roadways adjoining and leading to plots, tree and brush removal, irrigation, heat lamps, soil and water sampling, and application of herbicides. This will include the repair and maintenance of the equipment and tools to perform these tasks.
Must assist in taking data from research plots. Should have working knowledge of 200 prairie plant species, TDR (soil moisture equipment), soil and root coring.
Operating of tractors, lawn mowers, chain saws and other power equipment and power tools. Use of hand tools and the ability to maintain these tools.
Participates in prescribed burning of experimental plot areas. Including the preparation and minor maintenance of trucks, pumps, ATVs and other fire related equipment.
Assists in the maintenance of work areas and buildings. Including equipment shelters and storage areas. Minor plumbing, carpentry and painting will be included in these tasks.
This position will be a non-supervisory position but may act as a lead worker over part time, temporary or seasonal workers.
High school graduation and two years of education and/or experience in agriculture.
Experience working in and around research plots, experience with prescribed burning. Operational knowledge of field sampling instruments and herbicide applicators. Operational knowledge and experience with tractors, ATVs, chain saws, and power tools.
