The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab is seeking a Facilities Operations Group Lead to head our new facilities group. The successful applicant will lead a small team of 2 to 3 people to design and maintain the physical infrastructure that supports NERSC's supercomputer data center. You will be responsible for the electrical and mechanical systems needed to ensure large-scale liquid cooled supercomputers as well as smaller air-cooled clusters and storage systems operate efficiently. We work on innovative technologies to integrate systems data with facilities data to create a more efficient environment that allow us to lower energy costs while maintaining high data throughput.
You will work with other teams to integrate new hardware into existing systems while limiting downtime and manage several projects efficiently while ensuring timelines are met and management is kept current on status and any issues.

What You Will Do:
Lead a group of 2 to 3 people to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the B59 facility and all of its components.
Plan and schedule staff work efforts, establish goals, provide career development and mentoring, and conduct annual performance assessments.
Manage the 24x7x365 operation of complex multi-megawatt electrical and multi-ton chilled water and other mechanical systems that support the facility.
Develop, plan and implement procedures for reliable 24x7 facility operations requiring complex analysis and in-depth planning and evaluation of system operations. This includes contingency and failure analysis.
Monitor and optimize the energy and water use as needed to ensure systems operate within design limits.
Manage, support, and provide oversight to both subcontractor and Laboratory staff charged with facility maintenance, repairs and other infrastructure needs.
Provide requirements and direction to engineering and construction subcontractors in concert with the LBNL Projects and Construction Office to plan and execute major power or mechanical system related upgrades.
Plan and manage facility maintenance and on-site spares using mechanical and electrical expertise and select methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to minimize system downtime and maximize reliability. Coordinate plans with NERSC staff to ensure the computer system practices and policies are taken into account.
Coordinate to plan, implement, support, and execute effort as required to facilitate site preparation activities as needed for installation or movement of systems and equipment placed on the compute floor.
Provide input on facility related requirements to design reviews.
Generate and maintain space planning documents.
Provide oversight and support as required for the maintenance of the property management inventory and the resolution of discrepancies arising from the continuing movement of inventoried equipment.
Direct or coordinate delivery and staging of property and materials to Shyh Wang Hall, Building 59, as necessary.
Work collaboratively with other teams to define requirements for new data center related systems including compute, storage, and tape systems and ensure electrical, mechanical, and facility related tasks are accomplished as needed.
Apply engineering skills to find or develop innovative solutions to unique problems.
Strong commitment to proactive safety; willingness to exercise stop-work authority.
Provide multi-year projections to management, LBNL central facilities organization, and DOE. Develop and track facility budget for annual maintenance and projects.
Maintain a work environment that embraces diversity and fosters creativity and innovation; and ensures that DOE and Laboratory rules and policies are observed.
What is Required:
Bachelor's degree in mechanical (preferred) or electrical engineering or equivalent of 6 years' experience in maintaining large scale compute facilities.
Successfully managed a minimum of 3 medium to large facilities related projects using standard Project management techniques.
Have a background in construction, building facilities management, data center operations (including performing a facilities upgrade), or engineering design services with emphasis on data centers.
In-depth experience and understanding of complex mechanical and electrical building systems including demonstrated experience operating and maintaining complex water cooling and HVAC control systems..
Experiencing managing complex facility projects
Experience managing vendor contracts and personnel.
Ability to do work in a hands-on environment
Programming skills for ALC for BMS or demonstrated in some other language
Problem solving skills
Basic understanding of psychrometrics.
Ability and willingness to respond 24x7 as required.
Extensive project management skills and experience specifically related to computing facilities.
Demonstrated proficiency in commonly utilized business software applications including MS Office and Google applications.
Ability to independently prioritize and coordinate a wide range of responsibilities.
Excellent interpersonal skills, both oral and written, demonstrating effective, clear, and concise communication skills.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Familiarity with isolation floors and the requirements for working on and under them
Familiarity with free/ambient cooling techniques
Familiarity with projects operating under DOE order 413.3b and EVMS.
Interest in applying machine learning to data center operations.
Familiarity with large-scale computing systems
Verifiable experience complying and implementing OSHA and NFPA 70/NFPA 70E requirements for employees and employers in both construction and general industry.
