Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Master Plumber/Steamfitter for IPO Facilities Utilities. This position provides trade, technical and code compliance leadership in all aspects of plumbing, pipefitting and mechanical duties required for University facilities and utilities. Provides comprehensive plans for proposed work. Leads and oversees the work of lower level maintenance mechanics through the successful completion of projects.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Primarily responsible for the planning, estimating, material procurement and coordination of complex and general plumbing/pipefitting work to include; the installation and maintenance of steam, high temperature hot water, hot water, air, gas, pressure vessels and systems; boilers; steam and hot water coverters; heaters/storage/converter tanks; valves; strainers; safety valves; pneumatic systems; compressed air; waste and sanitary systems; laboratory waste piping; neutralization tanks; hydraulic systems; D.I. water softener systems; RO water systems; sewage ejectors; single and multi stage pumps; piping insulation and any other related equipment or system.
Inspects, maintains and upgrades facilities piping, pressure/storage vessel, and pumping systems.
Utilizes trade knowledge to ensure work is effectively and efficiently completed, and that all installed equipment conforms to code.
Expected to have thorough knowledge and experience working with various piping materials such as steel, cast iron, ductal iron, PVC, copper, glass, CPVC, various kinds of plastic tubing, and insulation materials.
Maintains the accuracy of the plant asset data files through a system of inspection, analysis, estimating and encoding data.
As the expert troubleshooter, uses a variety of tools and devices to diagnose problems and restore service.
Works with the supervisor to establish and implement preventive maintenance systems.
Detects faulty operation of equipment and reports questionable conditions to supervisor.
Instructs personnel in all safety rules and procedures in the performance of duties.
Performs related duties as required.
Secondarily responsible for planning, coordinating and/or performing general mechanical and preventive maintenance duties for various types of University property and equipment.
Inputs data as required to fulfill job responsibilities using current technology.
Generates and completes automated work orders or service orders.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent.
Requires a certified journey-level plumber’s license from the State of New Jersey.
Must have training in estimating and planning plumbing and steamfitting work. Also requires experience cutting, brazing and welding metals and pipes.
A valid driver’s license with two years driving experience is necessary.
Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Requires good communication skills, the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and blueprints.
Experience in joining methods of all types of piping.
Welding certification under Section IX, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code preferred.
Experience in convential heating and chill-water plants.
Experience in the operation and function of Co-Generation Plants.
Utility Distribution Piping in regards to mechanical systems is also preferred. This includes but not limited to: Sanitary, Storm, High Temperature Hot Water, Chill-Water, Air Distribution, Dual-Temp, Fire and Potable Water Distribution.
CDL license is desirable.
Working knowledge of autocad is also preferred.
