Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization of the Business and Administrative Services division at UC Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services and facilities, employee housing and capital planning, business and financial analysis, dining services, conference services, early education services, and the Bay Tree Bookstore and ID card services. Through these units educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents.
The Facilities unit of CHES provides comprehensive facilities support to over 9,500 student residents in ten colleges and six associated residential communities, as well as seven Dining facilities. The department maintains 186 buildings of 1.6 million square feet. Facilities employs 44 represented and non-represented career staff and over 45 student staff positions, and manages an annual budget of approximately $9.1 million.
The mission of the Facilities unit is to plan for, develop and maintain a comfortable and safe physical environment for residents, and cost effectively maintain Housing and Dining facilities.
Under the general supervision of the Trades and Project Coordinator and direction by the Dining HVAC Specialist, the HVAC Mechanic performs a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance, alteration and repair of equipment, facilities and systems within the UCSC Dining kitchens and residential apartments. This position will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and installation of the refrigeration systems and warm air furnaces. Service is provided to the kitchen facilities, and the serving areas at Cowell Colleges, Crown College, Porter College, College Eight, Oakes College Cafe, Colleges 9/10, Kresge Owl's Nest Cafe, and other production areas as assigned. Additionally the position serves the furnaces in all the residential apartments.

Journey level experience and/or skills in the installation, maintenance, and repair of building heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, (HVAC/R) equipment, electrical, plumbing equipment, kitchen equipment.
Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations necessary for craft work including the ability to read and understand equipment manuals, diagrams and specifications.
Demonstrated ability to weld and braze, using torch, stick or metal inert gas (MIG) welding equipment.
Demonstrated mechanical, electrical and plumbing skills as related to kitchen equipment and systems repairs.
Thorough knowledge of the theory and operation of major types of refrigeration equipment and of the materials, equipment and techniques used to repair and maintain such equipment.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
