Job Summary As one of the world's premier university facilities, the Owens Valley Radio Observatory plays a leading role in development and operation of advanced radio astronomy instrumentation. Continuing and newly funded projects have created an opportunity for an enthusiastic Mechanical Engineer to contribute to design and construction. The Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with technical staff and scientists on defining, designing and sourcing antennas, drive systems, and electronic assemblies for a new 110-antenna array. Tasks will include planning of power and fiber distribution, ensuring operation of existing antenna and cryogenic systems.

Job Duties - Prepare bid documents for antenna procurement - Oversee the process from antenna procurement through to assembly - Provide technical support for laying out and implementing fiber and power runs to antennas - Progress ideas for a cost-effective antenna elevation drive through to production and installation - Perform structural analysis and evaluation of large antenna structures to ascertain structural integrity - Perform regular inspections of antennas, particularly the 40-m and 10-m antennas and carry out or supervise preventative and curative maintenance - Contribute to development of packaging solutions for electronic systems - Analyze power and HVAC requirements and develop solutions for implementation - Provide advice and support for engineers and scientists for the design of receiver packages, cryogenic systems, feed fabrication and mounting, and other mechanical problems, as required - Maintain documentation of systems, maintenance, and operating procedures
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in mechanical or structural engineering - 5+ years of related work and leadership experience - Expertise in finite-element analysis, using high-end packages, such as NASTRAN - Expertise in high end CAD packages such as Autodesk Inventor or PTC Creo - Expertise in dealing with external suppliers and contractors - Must possess a valid Driver's License, and maintain it through out employment
Preferred Qualifications - Experience working with radio telescopes or similar large reflector antennas - Knowledge of basics of vacuum and cryogenic systems - Knowledge of fundamentals of optical design - Familiarity with GPS surveying - Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of people
