The purpose of this position is to perform professional and technical level work in the building code enforcement field by the review of plans, specifications, and calculations to verify their conformance to the building construction related codes adopted by the city of Vancouver; provide advice to the public and other staff members regarding the engineering, fire and life safety, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical aspects of the codes.
Perform technical review of construction plans, specifications, and calculations to verify compliance with all applicable codes City and State codes and regulations. Level III – Reviews all types of buildings and structures.
Research into the intent of code requirements to assist people in their attempt to comply with such requirements.
Provide building code assistance to permit counter staff and customers as necessary;
Consult with architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and other permit applicants to assist them in understanding the code requirements;
Conduct site visits where field information is helpful or necessary in verifying compliance with building code requirements; work with pre-lease team in assisting applicants/businesses who are considering construction projects. Drive and maintain the appearance of various city vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner when performing site inspections work.
Education and Experience
Associate degree with major coursework in architecture, engineering, building inspection, construction technology, or related field.
At least four (4) years of experience in construction trades as contractor, building inspector, or plans examiner.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Basic skills in permit and inspection tracking database systems; experience preferred with Hansen CDR, Tidemark, Project DOX, GIS and Hummingbird;
Basic skills in electronic review software; experience preferred with CAD, etc.
Basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
I.C.C. certification as IBC Building Plans Examiner and two other ICC Plans Examiner or Inspector certifications within one year of date of hire.
NOTE: "ICC certification" indicates attainment of certified status by accredited test from the International Code Council.
