Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Head Research Farmer for the Snyder Research and Extension Farm to oversee the IR-4 research projects. The IR-4 project assists specialty crop farmers gaining EPA approval for safe and effective biological and chemical pesticides needed to grow their crops.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Oversees the field operations and employees to promote research productivity, teaching, and profitability of the unit.
Oversees the production of crops for animal needs.
Participates in the planning and coordinates production schedules and routine cropping programs such as preparing crop rotations, soil fertility, soil preparation, planting, cultivating, harvesting, storage, pasture management, pest and weed control.
Monitors residual dates of pesticides for harvesting crops.
Prepares requisitions for crop needs, purchased feed and special needs.
Assists supervisor with coordinating schedules and training new employees.
Coordinates and performs equipment use, preventative maintenance and repairs.
Coordinates and performs all building and grounds maintenance and improvement programs.
Operates a variety of farm machinery such as trucks, tractors, plows, spike tooth and disc harrows, planters, harvest spray machines and irrigation equipment.
Detects faulty operation of equipment and reports questionable conditions to supervisor.
Oversees and performs routine and major repairs as indicated.
Guides others and performs manure removal, weed control, rodent control, fencing, repairs and general maintenance for animal facilities and general farm areas to include carpentry, painting, plumbing, etc.
Ensures cleanliness of equipment and facilities.
May perform snow removal duties.
Works with facilities in coordinating teaching and research program needs and performs experimental procedures typical of an animal crop research project.
Prepares, compiles and maintains records on daily operations, research projects, and on crop management.
Assists faculty in instructing students to perform basic equipment handling, preventative maintenance and crop production techniques.
May coordinate or assist with special programs and events.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent plus three years farm experience involving the operation and maintenance of farmlands and farm equipment.
A bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agronomy or animal science may be substituted for two years of work experience.
Must have or be willing to obtain certification in the application of pesticides.
Valid driver’s license plus two years driving experience required.
Will be required to successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
Experience in crop production as well as field research with agricultural pesticides, plot preparation, harvesting, sampling, handling research data, use of small pesticide application equipment, and computer data management.
Knowledge of IR-4 field research procedures, record keeping, samplings methods, sample storage, and shipping are desirable.
Previous evidence of experiences showing attention to detail in performance of daily activities.
Experience and mid-level proficiency with software applications that include word processing, Internet (email and web), spreadsheets, graphics, and statistics.
Maintain and operate various farm equipment (tractors, implements, sprayers, irrigation systems, etc.)
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Physical demands working outside under hot, humid and/or wet, rainy, muddy conditions, and sometimes cold.
Weekends and evening work hours required.
Flexible schedule to accommodate stringent spraying/harvest schedules.
Must be willing to attend IR-4 related meetings and trainings, including those requiring overnight travel.
Clean driving record.
Must be willing to obtain New Jersey Commercial Pesticide Applications Agriculture Plant Pest Control (Category 1A) and Research (Category 10)
