The office of Campus Facility Services is seeking an HVAC Mechanic.
Install, maintain and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning and steam distribution equipment and systems. Replace, repair or rebuild and adjust valves, piping, steam traps, steam pipes, air dryers and compressors, convectors, and humidifiers. Clean air handling units, checks fan/blower cfm, checks temperature of bearings, tests motors for amperage, voltage and rpms. Install and repair thermostats, sensors, controls (DDC) and motors. Wire components to electrical power source.
Utilize various diagnostic tools and equipment to inspect and test controls and systems and to locate malfunctions.
Perform preventative maintenance to HVAC-related equipment. Change belts and filters, grease motors, visually check compressors, pumps and other HVAC components. Clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears and other parts of machinery. Rod out/clean heat exchangers/tube bundles. Service forced air furnaces. Cut, bend, thread, and connect pipe to functional components and water, power, or refrigeration system. Braze or solders parts to repair defective joints and leaks. Mount brackets and hangers into floor and walls of building. Fabricate and assemble structural and functional components of refrigeration system, using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
Charge system with proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into the system.
May perform water treatments of closed loop water systems, cooling towers, chilled water and heating systems by collecting and testing water samples; add appropriate chemicals to maintain correct levels and balances.
Assist in bidding and design work with manager. Train apprentices and other personnel one-on-one as needed.
Assist with snow removal activities as necessary. Must be available to work during inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) when weather emergencies dictate that the CFS department is needed to take care of the campus.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance duties. Drive University vehicles as needed. Work any shift as needed. 24-hour a day emergency response as needed.
REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED, plus certificate in relevant DOL apprenticed trade OR 5 years of verifiable journey level experience. Must have a Valid Driver’s License.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities: The successful candidate should have knowledge of applicable building codes, regulations or ordinances and knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved with the trade. Must be able to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and/or schematics, and to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job. Basic computer proficiency, as well as the abilities to communicate, and to make basic math calculations. This position requires the ability to understand and follow instructions, as well as the ability to work in team environment and to interact and communicate with a wide variety of people.
