The Critical Facilities Engineer is responsible for coordinating design/build data center capital projects and the operational programs to maintain critical facility infrastructure systems. These include generators, switchgear, auto-transfer switches, transformers, main electrical distribution boards, UPS Plants, electrical busways, power distribution units, mechanicals such as CRAHs, Chillers, Pumps for precision cooling, fire detection and suppression, and facility management systems.
This position must handle and respond to urgent events when they occur; instructs third-party service providers in remediation efforts; and is responsible for 24/7 operational continuity of IT-managed critical facilities including emergency operations, business continuity, and disaster recovery. Establishes work rules and service goals for critical facility management with assurance of the proper commissioning and optimal functioning of critical systems including electrical, mechanical, fire/life safety, etc.
Uses advanced metering tools to produce metrics to manage and forecast capacity on space, power, and cooling for the effective, compliant, and efficient management of critical facilities supporting the University’s administrative, instructional, and research mission.
Individuals at this level, work independently, with minimal guidance to perform their work.
Plan, schedule, assign, coordinate, review work of engineering personnel engaged in the planning, design and support of complex mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems for multiple data centers and critical hub sites. Direct the preparation of plans, designs, scheduling, and specifications by engineers and technicians.
Consult with engineers, architects, and contractors concerning modifications and alterations required to sustain an enterprise data center ensuring minimal disruptions of IT service. Maintain effective working relationships with IT and University personnel, architects and contractors.
Responsible for the development, documentation and monitoring of performance measures and processes required for audit and operational compliance related to MEP best practices and industry standards for critical facilities. This includes emergency operation, business continuity, and disaster recovery plans for IT-managed critical facilities.
Conduct and oversee commissioning of systems including manufacturer witness testing through to full system operation. Establish critical facility change management procedures and oversee their enforcement.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Degree in electrical engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Ten years’ experience in managing critical facilities including MEP infrastructure for enterprise data centers or comparable mission critical facilities:
critical facilities management of a complex 24/7/356 environment
large scale UPS, generator back-up systems, and battery plants
electrical supply and distribution systems – Admin. Construction and Design Construction
precision cooling systems and air flow management
fire detection and suppression systems
overall data center design
Solid experience participating and leading construction and renovation projects for data center spaces.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, which requires extensive technical and non-technical communication skills working with internal staff, contract resources, vendors and customers.
Demonstrated skills in leadership and strong commitment to excellence.
Ability to use change management procedures and reengineering processes for developing and implementing new strategies.

Ten years’ experience in directly managing critical facilities including emergency operations and steady-state operations with good judgement when evaluating abnormal conditions and assessing risk.
Successful design/build experience with strong working knowledge of addressing challenges to remediate and expand critical infrastructure systems while maintaining a 24/7/365 environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Sequence of Operation, and Methods of Procedures (MOPs) and clearly present facility infrastructure solutions and services.
Must be able to multi-task and manage detailed projects across several critical facilities.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant degree.
Experience with energy efficient data center design for sustainability and energy management.
Data Center Professional certification.
Project Management Professional certification.

Understands regulatory and compliance impacts on the data center.
Understands the threat environment for critical facilities and has implemented protective measures.
Knowledge of device communication protocols to integrate multiple disciplines in the critical environment to create a comprehensive service for monitoring and control.
