Under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor and Lead HVAC Technician, the HVAC Technician will be responsible for the installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of various HVAC and Refrigeration equipment, local HVAC control systems and ancillary support equipment. The incumbent will coordinate with other groups within the Department and throughout the Laboratory to ensure long-term, safe and efficient operation of HVAC and Refrigeration systems.
Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair a wide variety of HVAC and Refrigeration equipment in a timely and cost efficient manner, as well as support commissioning efforts, on-going sustainability initiatives and energy efficiency programs at the Laboratory. Incumbent utilizes thorough knowledge of heating and air-conditioning theory, mechanical layouts, pipefitting, electrical and electronic theory, direct digital controls, airflow, pneumatic systems, hydronic systems and other techniques.
Assist with work in the shops when necessary to support severe weather work, corrective and preventative maintenance activities on facilities infrastructure, mechanical, electro-mechanical, hydronic and/or pneumatic systems.
Coordinate the activities of subcontract personnel to maintain continued and efficient operation of all building heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
Perform Other Duties as assigned by Supervisor
Has knowledge of, supports and consistently applies the Laboratory's Integrated Safety Management (ISM) program and all ES&H requirements. Incumbent will contribute to PPPL's safety culture by participating in STOP audits. Encourages others to be safety conscious and observes safety rules including the use of safety equipment and/or PPE. Reviews work for environmental impact, complies with ES&H Directives, DOE Orders and OSHA standards. Attends and participates in required training.
High School Education or equivalent and formal post high school vocational training in HVAC repair and maintenance including de-humidification systems.
Five (5) years of experience in the installation, operation, maintenance, calibration and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems in commercial and/or industrial setting.
General knowledge of the National Electric Code, Life Safety Code, OSHA and standard industry practices. Conform to industry standards concerning safety, lock-out/tag-out, inspections, and operations when dealing with electrical systems. Maintain high consciousness of safety for all personnel and areas involved.
EPA Certified Universal Technician in accordance with CAA Sections 608 and 609 to handle CFC's, HCFC's and HFC's.
Ability to be on-call, and work overtime, off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Maintain good communication between departments and other shop personnel.
Maintain good customer service relationships.
Ability to lift fifty pounds and access (or work in) confined or awkward positions.
Ability to work in Confined Spaces, from elevated platforms, roofs, scaffolding, ladders and overhead positions.
Moderate to high level of physical activity including: walking, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling and/or twisting.
Reads and understands blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and layouts.
