Departmental Overview The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and a faculty of 1,500. The Library comprises 24 campus libraries - including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, Jean Hargrove Music Library and 18 other subject specialty libraries housed in buildings on the Berkeley campus. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collection budget of over $18 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills. The Library Division has a current operating budget of approximately $80 million with an employee base of 400 academic, librarian, professional, staff and 600 student employees hired throughout the academic year and summer. The Library workforce is concentrated on the central campus but include staff stationed in Richmond (2 sites) and Oakland (1 site).
The Doe-Moffitt Libraries are the primary libraries for humanities, social sciences and undergraduate library services on the Berkeley campus; encompassing the Doe, Doe Annex, Moffitt library buildings and the Gardner Stacks and occupies an area about 500,000 square feet. This position is responsible for building maintenance, responding to repair requests and managing emergency preparedness.
Responsibilities Serves as liaison with campus and external agencies, eg, Facilities Services, Academic Facilities, EH&S and Custodial Services with respect to safety, access, maintenance, and construction activities.
Manages the daily operational building maintenance activities in several large library buildings;
Coordinates, monitors, tracks all maintenance, custodial, grounds and other service requests for assigned facilities;
Notifies occupants of events such as electrical and HVAC shutdowns, repairs and lighting modification schedules;
Ensures all service requests and emergency repairs are handled promptly and according to established procedures;
Coordinates work crew activities to minimize disruption to building occupants;
Conducts daily rounds of assigned library facilities to inspect for security, fire and accident hazards, and building systems irregularities.
Monitors computer based Energy management System (EMS), eg. HVAC, energy and lighting systems across multiple locations;
Regularly enters lighting schedule changes into the lighting control system per building operational hours/academic schedules;
Gathers data and information to make sound recommendations regarding equipment performance and energy activities.
Maintains building related plans and procedures including access controls and security, emergency preparedness, commonly-encountered hazardous materials storage and disposal, crime prevention activities, fire safety inspection compliance and reporting.
Acts as Building Coordinator for campus emergency/disaster preparedness;
Serves as communication liaison between campus service agencies and building occupants and prepares building response plans, provides training and coordinates education and planning for occupants.
In a declared emergency or exercise, respond to Emergency Management Area-6 and implement emergency operations in accordance with the campus Emergency Operations Center Plan.
Coordinates with multiple units throughout campus to provide a safe and secure facilities environment.
Coordinates with firefighting and civil law-enforcement agencies and also provides or coordinates routine inspection of facilities and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of building mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, campus and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Superior interpersonal skills including good service orientation and effective problem solving.
Thorough and effective skills to multi-task and prioritize daily activities effectively.
Knowledge of architectural and engineering concepts.
Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications.
Working knowledge of policies and procedures relative to facilities maintenance, equipment, customer service, dispatch, building maintenance, safety and emergency preparedness.
Working skills in coordinating facility maintenance and improvements.
Knowledge of concepts related to sustainable facility management and UC system wide sustainability initiatives.
Must be reliable, adaptable, and able to work independently as well as on a team, and meet deadlines.
Good experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and email platforms.
Able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds. Must be in good physical health and comfortable working in physically strenuous and sometime demanding conditions.
Must be able to work weekends, after hours, holidays, if needed, and when building emergency situations arise.
