This position is assigned to the EMCSHVAC Building Automation Control shop. The purpose of this shop is to serve as HVAC's building owner by interfacing with the building coordinator, serving as a first responder to calls, and ensuring the proper maintenance and operation of building HVAC and associated systems with emphasis on Building Automation controls in the pneumatic and direct digital arena. Troubleshoot, repair/replace/calibrate all related controls and sensors for HVAC fans, pumps and associated equipment. Operate HVAC systems in an efficient manner while maintaining indoor air quality and optimizing energy when possible.
This position will support the growth in campus buildings, infrastructure, and programs. The higher technology within the recent research labs require more time from the technicians, and this position is critical for supporting UNC-CH's core mission by keeping its facilities operating efficiently.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Must possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to operate as an HVAC Controls/first responder technician in developing, coordinating and executing various HVAC maintenance strategies for new and existing buildings, as well as construction strategies in renovation projects. Ability to use air and water balance devices, ability to design and repair pneumatic, electronic, and electro-mechanical controlled devices, sensors, and flow and pressure regulators; understand front end graphical user interfaces and how controls are implemented in buildings; ability to operate building control devices within the design sequence of the systems for proper utilization and energy efficient operation and at times recommend software improvements to others. Must understand the theory and have good working knowledge of pneumatic systems, direct digital control systems, electrical control systems, hydronic systems, air side/psychometric systems, and refrigeration and steam systems, as well as load calculations, air distribution, indoor air quality, and energy. Knowledge of safety needs and air exchange rates of lab systems and vivariums are required. Strong communication skills for diverse customer populations are also required. Ability to read and comprehend both mechanical and electrical blueprints, as well as control drawings.
Weekly BSL2+/3 on call duty will be required approximately every 6 weeks. Candidates must have the knowledge, skills, and ability to provide oversight to other trades supporting these labs.
