Departmental Overview The Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies teaches performance as a mode of critical inquiry, creative expression and public engagement. Through performance training and research, we create liberal arts graduates with expanded analytical, technical and imaginative capacities. As a public institution, we make diversity and inclusion a key part of our teaching, art making and public programming.
While primary responsibility entails department production, the position interacts with non-department users in the campus and community through rentals and loans of properties from stock. All department productions and events are open to the campus and broader community and serve approximately 600 campus participants and 8000 campus and community patrons (audience members) per year.
The Properties Director develops procedures for performance of variety of duties or performs complex duties within established policy guidelines and is responsible for a defined set of assignments, for example, all financial activities for the department. The Properties Director is expected to determine and create necessary procedures and set priorities and meet specific goals and objectives of the function or unit.
Execution, construction, and installation of scenic properties for all department productions.
Construct properties from designs and research materials in a variety of methods and techniques including: furniture building and finishing/refinishing; carpentry; upholstery; model building; sculpting; and various craft making skills.
Adapt properties from stock, and borrow, rent, or purchase new items to use as properties to coordinate with design, period, style, and function for each particular production.
Strive to ensure that work is of the highest professional standards.
Supervise load-ins, maintenance, and strikes of properties. Is present, as needed, at technical and dress rehearsals for consultation and training of student operators and for consultation with directors/designers regarding notes, changes, and additions.
Responsible for storage, cataloging, and disposal of all properties and set decorations.
Supervise expenditures for all properties and properties facilities within agreed upon budgetary limits.
Review and evaluate the renderings and research materials for properties and set decorations for issues and concerns.
Be able to offer solutions and feedback on such issues.
Develop and submit for approval, working drawings, paint treatments, and samples from scenic designs and sketches necessary for the completion of projects.
In consultation with Technical Director, schedule set decoration and construction projects and student labor.
Attend weekly production meetings.
Responsible for striking and returning all properties.
Research sources for materials and properties.
Research new materials and techniques to fulfill designers' concepts.
Consult with and advise colleagues, designers and directors as to available options for properties and economical solutions of problems; may design new techniques to promote efficient methods of construction or operation for properties on stage or in shop.
Responsible for daily maintenance of properties work and storage areas, materials, and tools; ensure the orderly storage of all equipment, materials, and supplies.
Assist in maintaining the scene shop and paint shop in a neat, orderly and safe condition.
Participate in daily clean up. Inspect, repair, and maintain tools and equipment.
Maintain inventory of expendable supplies for properties construction, including paints and other applications, specialty materials and hardware, adhesives, etc.
Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of the backstage areas, including, but not limited to, backstage proper, properties storage cabinets, trap room, and assorted storage areas.
Supervise temporary (casual) employees and ensure that all employees meet all safety requirements.
Supervise, train, and instruct in the work of approximately 4-5 work study and 20-30 registered students per semester assigned to work in the scene, paint shops and theater facilities for laboratory courses, including but not limited to: Theater 60 (Introduction to Technical Theater), 173 (Scenography: Scene Design for the Theater), and 176 or 179 (Applied Theatrical Design).
Train in construction of properties from working drawings or designs to ensure accuracy, including tool use, standard construction techniques, safe working practices, and techniques and practices of rigging and installation.
Train, instruct, and supervise students completing laboratory practice as properties technicians on run crew, including methods of gripping scenic properties; dressing of scenery; preparation, maintenance, and repair of properties; and duties associated with technical support for live theater including standards of professional conduct.
Train, instruct and supervise student actors in appropriate use of properties.
Ensure safe use of all properties.
Evaluate student performance for grading purposes.
On occasion, participates in lectures or demonstrations for various courses.
Manage properties collection: database, cataloging, approval of loans and rentals, establish rental fees, and maintenance of costume archives.
Coordinate borrowing and rental of department properties by other departments and off-campus theatrical groups.
Demonstrated working knowledge or ability to learn about University policy groups: Financial (procurement card, purchasing policies), Environmental Health and Safety (chemical inventory, shop safety manual, shop inspections, personal safety equipment, staff safety training, and computer use and security issues.)
Must have knowledge of non-university policies and guidelines, including some building codes, OSHA, Fire Marshall, etc.
Significant (mastery level) knowledge in the professional field of construction and fabrication for the theater and related industries especially as it relates to theatrical properties: and knowledge of theater practice.
Knowledge of the history of standards and current applications of theatrical techniques in properties and construction, including but not limited to, knowledge of techniques of furniture building, drapery making, scenic carpentry, finish carpentry, scenic painting, sculpting, and various craft based techniques (ceramics, papier-mche, etc.) and specialty skills (mould construction, pyrotechnics, circuit building, etc.).
Knowledge of principles and practice of stage combat as applies to weapons use and armory.
Knowledge of the history of period and style in architecture, decorative arts, and furnishings.
Knowledge of architectural/mechanical and theatrical drafting techniques.
Knowledge of properties of materials to ensure effective use, safe loads, and workability of various materials to achieve desired looks and functions of designs.
Additional knowledge of tool use and maintenance specific to the scene and paint shops, and theater facility. Knowledge of standards of practice in field, and standards of safety and safe operation in theater and related fields (concert, dance, opera, film, etc.).
Knowledge of techniques of building and construction in various building trades and related fields (carpentry, electrics, plumbing, etc.)
Standard techniques and practices of scenic artistry and treatments including: color mixing; painting and paint treatments (spattering, translucency, marbleizing, texturing, wood grain, etc.), in and on wood, metal, fabric, foam, plastic, etc.; sculpting; finish techniques; proper use of hand and power tools particular to paint shop such as air brush; spray equipment; texturing devices (feather, sponge, graining tools).
