The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking a Director of Architecture to join our design team, working on the creation of our new 422-acre North Campus in Spanish Lake and improvements to the South Campus in Forest Park. The successful candidate will lead the design team, preparing and overseeing other staff and outside consultants’ production of design documents, including architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, and other related tasks, as well as specification writing and presentation material production. This full-time temporary (anticipated five years or more) position reports to the William Bernoudy Vice President of Architecture & Planning. The successful candidate will represent the Zoo’s core values of Community, Creativity, Openness, Integrity and Life-Work Balance. All successful candidates for this position will be required to submit a criminal background check and drug test.
Assemble and maintain department staff for the purpose of planning and designing improvements at the Saint Louis Zoo North and South Campuses. Create staff work plans and regularly evaluate staff performance; establish and maintain budgets.
Provide oversight and monitor work performed by all department staff. Enforce quality control procedures.
Determine phasing and create detailed CPM schedules for projects and initiatives.
Negotiate and contract with outside design professionals and specialty engineers.
Hire, monitor and regularly evaluate outside design teams contracted to complete construction documents.
Procure the services of Construction Management teams to collaborate with pre-design services, scheduling, bidding and construction administration.
Coordinate with all trades and agencies to preserve design intent and meet code requirements. Facilitate acquiring permits to perform construction activities.
Use computer-aided drafting (CAD) software programs and equipment or a conventional drafting station to create and modify architectural documents, designs, working drawings, forms, charts and records.
Prepare and edit project manual components including bid requirements, material specifications, schedules, etc., following Saint Louis Zoo procurement policy.
Analyze current building codes, and other regulations/requirements to establish how they affect architectural drawings, and stay up-to-date on all required and relevant codes
Bring together structural, mechanical and electrical designs and create a way or a method of accurately arranging them to produce building designs that are understandable and feasible.
Draw detailed and rough scale plans for structures, foundations and buildings based upon preliminary concepts, sketches, specification sheets, engineering calculations and other provided data.
Acquire and assemble information needed to finish architectural drawings, visiting job sites when necessary to gather data.
Review and inspect the work of draftspersons, technologists, technicians and other relevant team members working on construction projects.
Proficiency in BIM (REVIT) software, AutoCAD, MS Office including PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite
Must possess valid Missouri driver’s license with no restrictions to work in the United States
10 years’ experience minimum with professional degree in architecture
Ability to travel as required
Good analytical, communications and human relations skills required. Must be able to handle multiple assignments/projects with varying completion dates and effectively prioritize.
