Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Parks, the Assistant Parks Superintendent will provide management and technical expertise to significant components of the park maintenance program, particularly around the maintenance of landscape plantings, playground equipment, athletic fields, irrigation systems and other water features. This position also includes significant management responsibilities around the City’s snow and ice clearing programs in pedestrian areas. The position requires a significant amount of off-hours work during winter months as well as emergency response year-round. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
Directly supervise staff involved in landscape planting, athletic field improvement and maintenance, inspection, maintenance and repair of playground equipment, and irrigation system improvement and maintenance; provide overall leadership and training related to these programs, assign and inspect work done by others, and ensure satisfactory and timely project completion.
Develop and implement a plan for the maintenance of landscape plantings at municipal properties, including parks, playgrounds, squares, plazas, medians and public buildings.
Provide technical leadership related to field and turf maintenance practices, particularly around the aeration, fertilization, mowing, and watering schedules of athletic fields.
Manage the ongoing implementation of the Department’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Plan.
Ensure that the City’s irrigation systems, water play features, and water fountains are functioning at maximum capacity through the coordination of contractors and City staff.
Develop contract specifications, bid documents, and cost estimates; assist with the procurement process; manage special projects and maintenance done by contractors; record work completed, and process pay requests, put all information in spreadsheets, word documents, graphical interpretations, etc.
Be able to recognize and correct park related issues such as broken or unsafe equipment be that playground equipment, benches, water fountains, etc.
Be able to ensure high quality maintenance practices throughout the parks with frequent inspections and use of computer-generated monitoring systems.
Directly supervise City employees and contractors involved in snow and ice clearing operations for pedestrian areas around public buildings, parks, and bus stops, including sidewalks and associated crosswalks and ramps.
Act as the Parks and Forestry supervisory/administrative head in the absence of the Superintendent

College degree in horticulture, agronomy, and/or related field required. Certifications related to landscaping, turf, management, irrigation, and/or related field preferred.
Five years of progressively responsible experience in landscape/horticultural operations, with at least two years of administrative/supervisory experience.
Significant knowledge of turfgrass, ornamental shrubs/grasses, and flowers, particularly those common to the northeastern U.S. Some knowledge of trees common to the region.
Significant understanding of and experience with landscape maintenance and construction contract management.
Comprehensive knowledge of and practical experience maintaining all aspects of irrigation and other park water systems, including computerized controls, electrical systems, and plumbing.
Demonstrated skill in verbal and written communication and mathematics.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of coworkers, contractors, and the public.
Experience with municipal government operations desirable.
