The University of Michigan’s Architecture, Engineering and ConstructionDepartment is looking for a dynamic Mechanical Engineer with a solid technical base to join our Mechanical Engineering Department. This engineer will lead Master Planning, Capital Planning, Design Management, and Operation and Maintenance Engineering Support for various projects, with a focus on Chilled Water Systems throughout the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor Campus. Collaborate with other stakeholders to oversee Chilled Water systems and other Hydronic and Steam Heating systems and distribution. Reports to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering within U-M’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction department.
Provide design management, project management, operational engineering support and proactive oversight of mechanical systems, with initial focus on Chilled Water (CHW) Systems.
Lead master planning for chilled water systems. Refine, enhance, oversee and participate in analysis and long-term planning for campus infrastructure, in conjunction with other F&O stakeholders, with special emphasis on chilled water systems and potentially district heating. Lead Chilled Water Committee to maintain and provide facility condition assessment information for chiller plants, and associated cooling towers, pumps, water treatment and chiller overhauls.
Prepare DDC estimates, review controls design and develop and/or review energy conservation measures (ECM) associated with CHW systems.
Assist manager of mechanical department in review of construction documents, and other tasks appropriate for a lead engineer within the mechanical department.
Project Design Manager:
Apply project management expertise as an AEC Design Manager to direct and oversee the activities of outside A-E firms and in-house engineers and architects in the preparation of studies, plans, specifications and estimates for multiple concurrent construction and renovation projects. Conduct project meetings that define and track scope, schedule, quality and budget of projects. Develop project teams, monitor performance and take corrective action as required to successfully complete projects. Communicate effectively and appropriately with users, funders, administration and other stakeholders regarding project progress, direction needed, and areas of concern. Develop project scope, schedule and budget in conjunction with users, funders and other stakeholders.
Coordinate, review and present designs to/with appropriate U-M committees, health and safety representatives, AHJ, State Fire Marshall and other building agencies to assure compliance with code and ordinances.
Coordinate anticipated construction activities with users, from planning through construction award phases, in conjunction with University’s construction phase project manager. Review and evaluate contract bids and proposals and make recommendations on contract awards.
Prepare and issue bulletins, review and approve design changes during construction and authorize change orders and payments to retained architects, engineers and contractors.
Project Mechanical Lead:
Apply mechanical engineering expertise as AEC Mechanical Lead to prepare studies and designs on select projects, in conjunction with other team members, and support staff. Initial focus will be on Chilled Water Systems, but will evolve to include other hydronic and steam systems, and potentially other mechanical systems.
Check and approve shop drawings. Visit job site and inspect for contract compliance.
Act as University representative to consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers. Supervise and review testing of engineering systems.
Utilize expertise in hydronic and steam systems to develop and maintain mechanical department master specifications and design guidelines in conjunction with associated U-M committees. Evaluate products for applicability in building mechanical systems and keep other design engineers updated on available technologies.
Operation and Maintenance Engineer for Chilled Water Systems:
Provide technical guidance for Operations and Maintenance staff, especially for CHW systems. Assist DDC programmers in troubleshooting and optimizing automatic control sequences based on actual operations. Assist in developing temporary strategies due to construction interruptions and unplanned outages. Assist Facilities Maintenance Department Chiller Program Manager with prioritizing cyclical chiller overhauls.
Pull and archive chilled water system control I/O point trend data. Review data. Take actions as necessary to ensure systems operate reliably as intended.
Periodically meet with water treatment coordinator and contractor to ensure systems are operated, maintained and replaced as required.
Periodically meet with chiller mechanics and Facilities Maintenance Region Managers to resolve concerns and to communicate the CHW Master Plan.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and registration as a State of Michigan Professional Engineer (PE), or ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire, is required.
Demonstrated 10 years of progressively responsible experience in project management, design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of building engineering systems with a focus on chilled water systems, and/or heating plants.
Effective interpersonal skills to interact with a diverse range of customers. Demonstrated leadership and delivery of exemplary customer service skills.
Excellent oral and written communications, attention to detail and organizational skills. Passion and engagement.
Considerable knowledge of Michigan Building Code and Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings, State of Michigan Mechanical and Plumbing Code International Fire Code, ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and other applicable regulations.
Experience planning, organizing, and overseeing design professionals/teams (consultants, engineers, designers, drafters) to provide construction documents and construction administration on capital projects.
Construction management experience, and knowledge of life cycle/ value engineering, energy analysis, sustainable design, work load management and safe work practices is desirable.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
