The SUNY Geneseo Facilities Department is looking for a productive and hard working individual to join their team as a Trades Generalist, specializing in Masonry & Plastering. Find out more about our Facilities department!
The selected applicant position will perform journey-level masonry and plastering work including the planning and laying out of jobs. This requires the applicant to have a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used.
You may be responsible for overseeing others in the construction and repair of buildings and structures, involving the use of a variety of masonry materials including brick, stone, plaster and concrete.
Required Qualifications MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS Four years of full-time experience in masonry and/or plastering under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
Preferred Qualifications PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS
-Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in masonry and plastering work including physical properties of masonry materials, mortar and plaster. -Basic knowledge of applicable building and safety codes associated with the masonry trade. -Working knowledge of the tools of the masonry trade including ladders and scaffolding. -Working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility. -Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems. -Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.
Applicants must possess a valid NYS drivers license, be able to understand and follow instructions and read, write, and communicate verbally. Candidates must have a record of dependability and past work performance and possess computer skills adequate to work with computerized maintenance management systems and other computerized applications as assigned.
Job Duties/Responsibilities Function 1: Laying Building Materials
Lays building materials such as stone, brick, and concrete cinder block to construct or repair walls, partitions, utility manholes, firebrick linings in furnaces, and chimneys.
- Lay out work following blueprints and specifications by measuring distance from reference points and marking guidelines on working surface. - Mix or direct the mixing of mortar and concrete. - Spread mortar on working surface and to block or stone positions and align the block using a plumb bob, gauge line and level. - Remove excess mortar from face of block and finish mortar between brick with pointing tool or trowel. - Plan and estimate materials and labor for all functions of the masonry work required. Function 2: Tile and Plaster WorkBuild and repair walls, floors and ceilings using tiles or plaster.- Prepare surface by removing damaged tiles or applying plaster to concrete base.- Spread adhesive base on surface.- Cut, shape and apply tiles to surface according to specifications.- Mix or direct the mixing of plaster and the erection of scaffolds if needed.- Remove broken or loose plaster and prepare surface.- Apply scratch coat of plaster and finish coats of plaster to desired thickness and texture.
