The Storage Services Engineer will join a highly effective team of dedicated storage professionals supporting tens of petabytes of scale-out storage for researchers working at the cutting edge of Life Science research and innovation.
We are looking for a passionate storage professional who is excited by the responsibility of securely storing and protecting ~30PB of research data much of which is attached to a High-Performance Compute Cluster. The successful candidate is excited about providing a great customer experience to our research community, students, faculty, and staff. The Storage Services Engineer will have primary responsibility for maintaining Harvard Medical School's Isilon storage infrastructure, currently consisting of 12 separate Isilon clusters with a total formatted capacity in excess of 60PB. As such, the successful candidate will have deep experience with installation, configuration, and administration of Isilon clusters at scale. Demonstrated expertise in these systems including troubleshooting experience of SyncIQ, Smart Connect, Snapshots, Quotas, and Isilon's API is required. The candidate must also have experience with both CIFS/SMB and NFS protocols, including Windows and Unix permissions, in a mixed protocol environment.
In addition to Isilon, we also have a large parallel file system storage environment that supports Lustre and GPFS. We also have a growing cloud storage strategy and multiple traditional block storage arrays as well as archive and incremental back-up tiers. All storage runs over the HMS Ethernet or Infiniband networks; experience with these technologies is a plus.
Given the rapidly evolving storage landscape and the overall storage footprint at HMS we are always looking at new technologies and new partners. The Storage Services Administrator will need to keep abreast of new storage technologies, and offerings and is expected to recommend new opportunities and directions to the larger team.

Bachelor's degree, or equivalent professional experience.
A minimum of 5 years in Storage Engineer positions with direct interaction with servers and hardware or equivalent IT experience
Experience with Isilon storage, including installation/configuration, software configuration, and troubleshooting maintenance and management of Isilon storage systems
A good understanding of LINUX and Windows permissions, shared folders, remote application execution, and associated best-practices
Experience managing large-scale multi-vendor projects and deployments
The position requires the ability to lift hardware (typically less than 50lbs, but occasionally greater than), reach up to 6 or 7 feet above the ground, and work comfortably in confined spaces (such as between racks in a datacenter)

Under supervision participate in data migration and hardware upgrade projects
Review new and existing IT projects, systems design, and procurement/outsourcing plans for compliance with IT standards and architectural plans
Troubleshooting of any issues clients and users experience through to completion and resolution, including vendor escalation when necessary
Create and maintain documentation
Implement additional storage tiers
Participate in off-hours on-call schedule
This position will require occasional night and weekend work

Record of keeping abreast of industry trends and changes in technologies
Experience in designing and managing large-scale (2PB to 15PB) file storage systems (both traditional NAS such as SMB/CIFS and NFS, and parallel file systems such as GPFS and Lustre)
Experience managing mid- to large-scale (250TB to 1PB) SAN storage systems
Experience installing and configuring Fiber Channel networks
Strong organizational and communication skills (written, oral and presentation); a concern for accuracy, details, and quality.
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to prioritize work and to be flexible in job tasks
Some experience with industrial controls/building management systems (HVAC, power, cooling, infrastructure monitoring)
Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
