Construction Trades Specialist I - Planning, Design, Construction & Scheduling 11939
The Design & Construction department of Planning, Design, Construction & Scheduling at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Trades Specialist I position. Under the direction/guidance of a Carpenter Lead, this position will perform carpentry journeyman level work for construction, renovation, or alteration projects in WVU facilities.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Perform required demolition.
Perform "rough" and/or "finish" carpentry duties for the purpose of completing complex construction/renovation/alteration projects (large scale demolition, classroom renovations, build-outs of unfinished space, conversion of existing facilities to research laboratories, office complexes, computer labs, storage areas, etc.) by:
Erecting and disassembling various types of fixed and roll scaffolding, stairways, and ladder systems for above ground/floor work.
Moving materials and supplies to work site.
Preparation and "lay out" from available documents (blue prints, shop drawings, manufacturer provided installation guidelines, sketches, or modified two-line drawings) of the construction project.
Placing concrete and finishes in accordance with acceptable standards.
Constructing metal stud load bearing and non-load bearing partition walls.
Marking, cutting, and shaping materials to prescribed measurements and assembling by fastening with screws, nails, staples, dowels, glue, etc.
Framing door, window, and one way mirror openings in metal stud or wood wall partitions, concrete masonry units, glazed tile, or brick.
Preparing, installing, and finishing gypsum drywall, blocking, and concrete board.
Preparing and installing ceiling grid systems and finishes ceiling systems - suspended acoustical tile, suspended gypsum board, and suspended plaster.
Installing various wall treatments - wood, FRP, sound absorbing panels, paint, etc.
Preparing and installing various floor coverings.
Installing and finishing laboratory casework, mill work (cabinetry, moldings, and trim), countertops, and back splashes.
Preparing and installing door and window frames, door leafs and glass, and door hardware - locks, door closers, electronic locking systems, kick plates, door stops, etc.
Maintaining a safe work site by performing housekeeping, trash removal, and construction debris removal.
Operate, maintain, and repair hand or power tools and equipment of the carpentry trade by cleaning, oiling, setting, welding, or other processes.
Assist other trades in construction/renovation related activities. Activities may include assisting in the installation of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or security systems and the demolition of like material.
As part of the construction team, incumbent will clock in and out at the job site as well as taking breaks and lunch at the job site. Incumbent is expected to work at a production rate equal to the labor rates referenced in the RS Means Construction Cost Data Series. Unit is self-supporting and positions are funded by the timely completion of construction/renovation projects.
Be required to use a computer to document time on the job, materials used, conditions, or problems.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Hours: Monday-Thursday, Four 10 hour days
Pay Grades: 1 3, WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.
High School diploma, plus up to 18 months of technical or vocational training or equivalent education and experience.
At least two (2) years of experience with commercial or academic construction, renovation and alteration work.
Valid Driver's License
The following are strongly preferred and must be completed within 12 months of employment:
10 Hour OSHA certificate
Asbestos Awareness Training
Scaffold, fall protection: ladder and rigging certification
Physical demands include
Working in difficult job sites ranging from: dirty, severe heat and cold, confined spaces, heights over 10 feet, standing for long periods of time, stooping, climbing, etc. constantly.
Must be able to have the physical stamina to lift and carry construction debris/material weighing up to 70 pounds constantly.
