SUMMARY: A maintenance technician at Indiana University South Bend performs a variety of critical tasks across our campus. Among these tasks are skilled maintenance and construction work, multi-craft repair and maintenance of university property, operation of tools and equipment as required, and performing other related duties to facilitate the overall mission of our department. This position will be part of the on call rotation handling maintenance emergencies across campus after hours. PRIMARYDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs skilled maintenance and repair work on facilities and equipment.
Diagnoses mechanical problems and determines how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
Repairs or replaces defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools.
Maintains parts, supplies, and equipment advising the supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.
Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Occasionally leads a small crew in the performance of maintenance tasks.
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Certificate in Department of Labor apprenticed trade (electrical/plumbing/HVAC/carpentry) OR 5 years of verifiable journey level experience. A combination of training and experience may be considered.
Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools used to perform job duties in area of expertise.
General knowledge of multi-craft maintenance in carpentry, electric, HVAC, and plumbing.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to operate the specific tools used in the various crafts, including related tools and equipment such as common hand and power tools, hammers, hoists, saws, drills, wrenches, precision measuring instruments, electrical and electronic testing devices.
