Specialist - Center for the Built Environment
The Center for the Built Environment at the University of California, Berkeley invites applicants for a Specialist research position to work with Dr. Hui Zhang to leading research projects in building science that include human thermal perception experiments, field studies of occupant comfort, building performance assessments, building HVAC system performance and control, IEQ monitoring technologies, and modeling and simulation solutions for IEQ research.
Appointment Length: This is a part-time position at 50% time for two years. The appointment may be renewal depending on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Anticipated start date is November 2019
Duties of position include:
Assist in the development of software (including embedded firmware, data processing and human-machine interfaces) and hardware for a novel ultrasonic anemometer based on state-of-the-art MEMS sensors;
Collaborate in developing research capabilities and direction for the thermal comfort team at CBE, to identify trends in research and corresponding needs of team capabilities to take on the research challenges;
Assist in preparing proposals to apply for project funding from government agencies and industry;
Conduct experimental design and set-up, including data acquisition systems, physiological measurements, human and building performance assessments, and simulation methods;
Conducting experiments (both in laboratory settings and field-studies), including psychophysics research, HVAC system performance, monitoring equipment testing, occupant surveys and experience sampling with data elements about demographics, behaviors, and responses.
Conducting comprehensive data analysis (including qualitative and quantitative data);
Assisting in preparing project reports for funding agencies and/or industry partners;
Minimum Basic Qualifications:
Master's degree or equivalent international degree at time of application
Preferred Qualifications: (1) Experience with building indoor environmental quality monitoring equipment; (2) Technology commercialization experience; (3) Experience with human thermal comfort modeling (both physiological and perceptual models); (4) Experience with human subject thermal comfort laboratory testing; (5) Expertise in hardware development for building science research applications; (6) Strong software development skills, including embedded firmware development for 16-bit and 32-bit microprocessors; (7) Expertise with wireless communications and IOT applications; (8) Expert on computer languages: C++, Python or equivalent; (9) Excellent English writing and communication skills; (10) At least 7 years of experience designing and conducting research;
Salary The full-time annual salary will be commensurate with experience..
