The Intelligent Building Agents (IBA) project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is looking for a PhD graduate for a postdoc position. The purpose of the IBA project is to demonstrate the potential for distributed, intelligent software agents to perform the optimization of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial buildings and to develop a research infrastructure suitable for development and testing of advanced agent-based optimization techniques that can reduce operating costs and improve the energy and comfort performance of building systems. The Intelligent Building Agents Laboratory (IBAL) at NIST is a one-of-a-kind testbed for these intelligent control algorithms and will provide the postdoc a unique opportunity.
The postdoc will conduct an expanded and detailed investigation of the AI techniques that are the backbone of the intelligent agents, which may be applicable to HVAC controls. Each agent will require a model of the system whose control it is optimizing. Outcomes of this research could include: models of equipment, a method for evaluating the quality of machine learning models and the effectiveness of different approaches, a determination of the quantity of data required for a model, etc.
This position requires some familiarity with machine learning techniques and data analysis, but a background in HVAC is not required. The postdoc will work closely with a strong research team on this project but will have freedom to define and pursue their own research directions.
