About the Position:
The Lead Maintenance Technician is responsible for assisting the Sr. Maintenance Manager in sustaining the appeal and physical integrity of the buildings in the Housing community at Mason. This responsibility includes identifying/coordinating/completing all repairs and general building maintenance requests as submitted through the Housing maintenance request system. This position is also responsible for overseeing and supporting building preventive maintenance and management of building turnover processes in conjunction with the Sr. Maintenance Manager, as well as maintaining building supplies and equipment.
The Lead Maintenance Technician supervises Maintenance Technicians as assigned and, as such, coordinates duty schedules, work assignments, time reporting and other supervisory tasks for these employees, as warranted. The position is a night time position, Wednesday – Saturday evenings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting/wall repairs and installation as needed;
Ability to practice effective oral communication skills with students, faculty and staff;
Ability to read, understand and abide by all safety policies and procedures;
Ability to read, understand and follow equipment and system manuals;
Bilingual abilities (English/Spanish) preferred;
Because of the nature of the position and frequent verbal contact, candidates should command the English language.
Special Licenses, Registration, or Certification:
Valid driver's license with a good driving record and must be insurable;
HVAC certification preferred;
EPA certification in refrigerant handling and recovery preferred;
Demonstrated ability to operate Snow Removal Equipment.
Education or Training (cite major area of study):
High school education plus specialized training.
Level and Type of Experience:
Demonstrated experience in coordinating and supervising facilities maintenance and repair work;
Working knowledge of all construction trades including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, access control and general building construction, preferably in a campus housing/university setting;
Experience in formulation and implementation of formal preventive maintenance programs;
Must be able to perform campus-wide inspections of work in progress;
Familiarity with OSHA, and building codes and regulations mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia;
Heavy pulling, lifting and carrying equipment, materials, and climbing ladders at heights of 15-30 feet and higher.
Working within a student-oriented living environment;
Demonstrated years of related experience;
Equivalent combination of education and experience indicating proficiency in the preceding knowledge and abilities;
Preference provided for candidates with prior University residential or multi-residential community maintenance experience.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
