Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of full time experience as a plumber under a skilled journeyman which provides training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a plumbing trade or training gained by the completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. The Trades Generalist performs journey level work in Plumbing and semi-skilled level work in HVAC. Candidate must be able to perform the physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting/moving up to 50 lbs, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Selected individual must successfully pass a pulmonary function test to certify them to wear protective equipment (I.E. Hepa Filter type respirators). The test shall be provided by the employing department.
Preferred Qualifications: Working knowledge of building operations systems. Ability to supervise and train assigned subordinate personnel. Secondary trade is HVAC. Brief Descriptions of Duties: The Trades Generalist performs journeyman plumbing in the installation, alteration and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures in heating, ventilation, heating controls, water and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes. The secondary trade is HVAC. The Trade Generalist will need to have knowledge of OSHA, PESH, and Safety Regulations. Working knowledge of the math of the craft trades. Must follow University Safety Policies/Procedures and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. As a Trades Generalist you must be able to climb, stoop and move heavy objects or equipment. Respond to emergency calls on and off shift. Entry into confined spaces and working within the utility tunnel for extended periods of time. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
Repair and maintain piping systems and plumbing fixtures.
Replace defective pipe by cutting, bending, threading and assembling pipe.
Work with a variety of materials in addition to sheet metal, boiler and chilled water condensate lines, repair heating and cooling coils, replace valves, repair fin tube radiation, pneumatic controls, gas hot water heaters and other gas appliances, cooling / heating systems, controls and various steam equipment.
Use and maintain tools, machines, equipment and materials used in plumbing, HVAC and related trades.
Conduct inspection to determine maintenance needs and recommends.
Plan, layout and complete varied plumbing and HVAC work.
Inspect all connections and other parts of systems for leaks.
Install plumbing and HVAC equipment and systems
Plan new installations alteration to existing installation and major repairs consistent with specification and plumbing and HVAC codes.
Estimate materials and labor required to complete work orders and/or projects.
Read blue prints and plans.
Operate HVAC Heating and Cooling Systems:
Perform preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment
Operate, maintain and repair HVAC systems and Mechanical equipment
Conduct repairs on but not limited to pump bearings, hand valves, fans, filters, etc.
Monitor systems and equipment:
Make adjustments to heating and cooling systems to comply with appropriate standards and guidelines.
Implement and enforce safety procedures and standards.
Shows proper care when utilizing power tools and proper safety procedures.
Keeps work areas clean and safe.
Follow all Lock Out/Tag Out procedures.
Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
Follow all work orders.
Fill out or complete all work orders daily to include time and materials used.
Provides instructions to Maintenance Helpers / Assistants and/or on routine jobs and equipment inspections.
Clean Mechanical Rooms.
Respond to emergency calls on and off shift.
Other duties as assigned as appropriate to departmental rank and mission.
Special Notes: These are full-time positions, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference.
