Position Summary: Provides maintenance of the infrastructure systems; provides maintenance, troubleshooting and repair services on all of the University's heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm.
Assist other lower grade mechanics in performing emergency and/or periodic maintenance as well as the overhauling and repairing of mechanical equipment assigned to the Department of Plant Operations
Inspect, test, troubleshoot and repair all mechanical and electrical HVAC equipment
Disassemble, test and repair components such as, but not limited to, electrical motors, DDC controls, pneumatic controls, switches, valves, pumps, compressors, various piping and tubing, repair and/or adjust defective or worn parts as necessary to restore HVAC equipment
Coordinate with Department Heads to ensure availability of facilities/areas to be repaired/maintained and minimize hindrance to ongoing operations
Determine and monitor stock inventory levels that pertain to the Plant Operations Department
Perform other job related duties as required.
Subject to being on-call, carrying a pager or two-way radio, working with hazardous materials, schedule changes based on the needs of the University and long hours to complete/perform scheduled or emergency functions/projects. Will report to senior Plant Operations staff.
Experience & Educational Background:
High School and Related Trade School diploma plus a minimum of 12 years of mechanical experience maintaining heating and air-conditioning equipment
Capable of lifting, pushing and carrying various heavy tools, equipment and material
Climb, balance, kneel, stoop or crouch to gain access to pipes, valves and equipment
Ability to use hand and power tools
Must adhere to operational safety rules and regulations as deemed by the University
Must be able to follow directives and possess good communication skills and ability to interact with building/office occupants effectively
Must be able to provide coverage on weekends and emergencies including severe weather emergencies
Strong mechanical aptitude servicing HVAC equipment including absorption air-conditioning systems and high-pressure steam equipment
Able to withstand exposure to wet and cold conditions as well as noise and vibrations from operating machinery
Competence to start and stop the various systems
Knowledge of proper and improper operation of heating and cooling systems/components
Knowledge of chemical treatment procedures and testing
Ability to perform major planned maintenance on systems/components as well as operation/maintenance of various heating/cooling systems
Ability to assume various specific assigned responsibilities for diagnostics, operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of major heating/cooling system components
Ability to direct and supervise major repair, renewal and rehabilitation of heating and cooling system components
Train lower level grade personnel as assigned
Ability to direct and supervise all phases of assigned projects on a building-by-building basis
