![]() HVY DUTY EQUIP TCHN (Technician, Heavy Duty Mech.) Job Summary Under general supervision of the Unitrans Maintenance Manager, responsible for assigned repairs to all vehicles (approximately 55 total) within the Unitrans fleet, including heavy- and medium- duty diesel, compressed natural gas, and battery-electric buses, as well as a small support fleet of vans, cars, light duty trucks and maintenance equipment. A significant function of the position will be repairing and maintenance, fabrication of vehicle components, and transit coach servicing and inspections of vehicles and equipment that are primarily powered by CNG in addition to gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and electric. Note: Unitrans is transitioning to electric buses. POSITION INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work 8-10 hours standing, bending, stooping, reaching, walking and lifting. Work in awkward positions under dashes, lifts, and various other items. Safely lift heavy objects such as transmissions, wheels and tires of various weights up to 70 lbs. Manual dexterity to use hand and power tools and shop equipment. Trace electrical wiring by color. Work and repair equipment located in cramped areas. Work in awkward positions. WORK ENVIRONMENT Possess a valid Class A or Class B California Driver's License with air brake Endorsement and DOT medical certificate within 30 days of hire. Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice system. Employment contingent upon successful completion of the Department of Transportation (DOT), Drug and Alcohol Testing Program; employee will be placed on the random testing pool list for drug and alcohol testing. Wear Protective clothing and appropriate PPE (i.e., steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.). Employee is personally responsible for following safety procedures/guidelines. Personally provide basic tools to perform job. Work overtime, as needed on little to no notice, to meet operational needs. Work in a loud environment with variable seasonal temperatures both outdoors and indoors. UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. QUALIFICATIONS Required: Experience diagnosing and repair of transit/heavy duty vehicles. Experience working in an automotive and heavy equipment repair facility and operating and maintaining shop equipment. Experience with hybrid and/or electric vehicle battery systems and specifications. Skills to interpret and understand technical manuals and engineering drawings. Skills in heavy duty vehicle maintenance inspections and servicing. Skills to operate forklift in a confined area. Knowledge of standard safety procedures used in the repair of heavy-duty vehicles. Skill to safety operate a medium-duty wrecking truck in the towing of buses. Skills to use solvents, sandblasting machines, and steam cleaners for cleaning parts and components. Experience with overhaul and repair of heavy-duty natural gas, battery-electric, or diesel engines. Skills in overhauling, adjusting, and repairing Cummins Natural gas and Diesel engines including use of Cummins computer based 'insite' software for diagnosis and repair. Knowledge of HVAC systems, including use of computer aided for diagnostics and repair. Skills in repairing heavy-duty transmissions, including use of computer aided diagnostics and repair. Skills in diagnosing, overhauling, and adjusting 12- and 24- volt alternator units. Skills to closely follow written and oral directions. Skills to interact in a collaborative and team-oriented environment. Skills to lead, train, and direct junior employees and work in a student learning environment. Interpersonal communication skills working with students and people outside the organization, such as vendors and suppliers. Ability to develop creative solutions to unique maintenance challenges caused by the age and complexity of vehicle fleets. Preferred: Experience with maintaining battery electric buses including tooling and training. Skills in diagnosing and repairing high-pressure fueling systems using compressed natural gas. Knowledge of proper hazardous material handling procedures. Experience working with and mentoring employees.
