Description of Position: Positions allocated to this classification are primarily responsible for providing routine and relatively non-complex mechanical maintenance and repair work to building systems and other related equipment. This classification specification will not specifically identify every eventuality or combination of duties and responsibilities of positions that currently exist, or those that result from changing program emphasis or organizational structures in the future. To be classified as a Maintenance Mechanic 1, the majority of tasks performed must be in the job duties of this classification as noted below.
Responsibilities: Mechanic 1 classification performs the majority of tasks noted below, and includes other related duties as assigned: Tests and inspects eyewash and safety showers Cleans waste from fixtures up to and including the P Trap Inspects and lubricates portable sump pumps Inspects, lubricates, troubleshoots, repairs and adjusts controls of domestic heating and/or cooling pumps Inspects, lubricates, and tests autoclave/sterilizers and glass/cage washers; repairs components if isolated by an approved back flow preventer Adjusts temperatures and flushes water heaters Tests, cleans, lubricates, monitors, and inspects water and air cooled compressors and vacuum pumps; repairs and replaces components (including filters) if isolated by an approved backflow preventer Inspects, lubricates, repairs, and maintains (including filters) air handling units including fixed blade axial fans and fume hood systems Replaces fan shives, shafts, bearings and motors Repairs flushometers, faucets, and toilet flush assemblies (without removing the fixture) Inspects tests, cleans, repairs and performs daily operation of pools and spas Inspects and maintains generator sets Maintains and repairs small engines Repairs motors and pumps Installs and maintains window air-conditioning units (including filters) excluding breaking into refrigerant side Exchanges and replaces compressed gas cylinders Performs minor electrical maintenance (switch/outlet plates, replaces lamps, resets breakers, etc.) Maintains and repairs general building systems and hardware Maintains and replaces bathroom accessories. Performs welding Troubleshoots building equipment and systems by accessing a computerized equipment monitoring and automation system Displays CMMS competency in performing parts/equipment/work order searches, ordering parts and time card entry Notifies supervisor of equipment or supplies in need of repair or replenishment; also of facilities in need of repair or upkeep Maintains and repairs overhead doors Assists Mechanic 2’s and 3’s as assigned without assuming full responsibilities of the higher classification.

Work Environment: Work is performed in the field. This position will be exposed to hazardous conditions where hearing and visual protection may be required.
Minimum Qualifications Vocational education in mechanical maintenance totaling two years. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Certain positions within this classification may require specific licenses and/or certificates (i.e. pool mechanic license, welding certificate, etc).
Preferred Qualifications One year of applicable work experience.
Essential Qualification Regular attendance is an essential qualification for this position.
Physical Requirments Ability to perform heavy manual labor, lifting up to 50 pounds ability to work in confined spaces wearing a PAPR Ability to work in extreme hot/cold, dirty spaces Ability to climb ladders and perform work overhead Ability to climb, stoop, bend, stand, crawl, push and pull for extended periods of time Ability to perform snow removal duties including shoveling and operating a snow removal equipment Ability to use hand tools and specialized power tools Ability to operate heavy equipment including fork lifts and bobcats
