This position performs skilled journeyman level work in the maintenance, repair and installation of refrigeration, heating, air conditioning and ventilating systems, and their controls. This position is considered essential. Personnel may be required to respond to campus emergencies both during and off shift. Major Responsibilities: Typical Duties * Operates, maintains, repairs and installs all types of air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration equipment or systems, including chilled water and cooling tower equipment and systems. * Maintains, repairs and installs hot-water heating systems. * Adjusts and performs repairs and corrective maintenance on complete direct expansion systems including refrigeration compressors, condensers, cooling systems, blowers, fans, expansion valves, cooling water and condenser pumps, dampers and all related controls. * Checks and determines accuracy of HVAC and refrigeration systems by use of appropriate instruments (e.g., sling psychrometer) of thermostats, humidistats, dehumidistats, recorders and other automatic controls. * Inspects chilled water and condenser water pump for proper operation by reading pressure gauges, cooling tower for proper operation by reading thermometers in supply and return lines, chiller and condenser for proper efficiency by reading thermometers and gauges, compressors for proper operation by reading pressure gauges, direct expansion refrigeration systems, electric, electronic and pneumatic controls. Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions. * Diagnoses, inspects, trouble shoots, and overhauls electrical control circuits, temperature and pressure controls, and all related refrigeration components using manuals, blueprints, and equipment knowledge. * Tests coils, valves, and connections to determine that systems are leak proof and properly adjusted. * Operates and maintains cooling towers. * Recharges units with proper refrigerant when necessary, and maintains and repairs compressor units and departmental research refrigeration equipment. * Tests, makes measurements, and adjusts all types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems for most efficient performance. * Maintains large refrigeration equipment, such as ice rinks, built in refrigerators, and small closed-cooling systems for laboratory equipment. * Operates, services, and repairs heat pumps. * May lead or instruct helpers as required. * Performs related duties as required. * Maintains clean work area and/or clean job site upon completion of assignment. * Observes safety rules and precautions. Qualifications: Must be a High School graduate or possess a general equivalence degree (GED). Objective bench test and/or field test will be required Willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment. Brown's Office of Risk Management requires the use of respirators as a precautionary safety measure in areas deemed to be an exposure hazard to employees. Candidates must be able to obtain certification in the use of a respirator and be able to be re-certified annually. In order to be certified, candidates must be able to successfully pass a physical and pulmonary function test at a clinic, attend a training class and be able to be fitted with a respirator. No person can be certified to wear a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus/respirator who has a beard. Experience: * Must possess state of Rhode Island Refrigeration/Journeyman II License. * Must possess a City of Providence Refrigeration Machine Operator license. * Must possess certification as a Universal Technician, such certification to be awarded by a program certified by the EPA. * A minimum of two years of relevant experience required. Knowledge, Skill, Abilities: General responsibilities include responding, evaluating, and executing electronic service requests and maintenance repair work orders including entering accurate records of work performed and materials used into FMâ™s computerized maintenance management software using mobile technology devices. This position requires the ability to use a computer, laptop, or mobile device comfortably. ⢠Must possess a thorough knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, and the ability to apply that knowledge and skills in an effective manner. * Must be able to read and interpret Service Orders and instructions. * Must be able to read and understand plans, blueprints and schematics related to HVAC and refrigeration systems. * Must be capable of working independently on all HVAC and refrigeration maintenance and repair projects. * Must have the knowledge and ability to balance air and hydronic heating and cooling systems. * Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license. * Must possess own hand tools. * Must be physically able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. * Must have the physical ability to walk throughout the campus and to climb stairs throughout the duration of the shift. * Must be able to climb and work from ladders, lifts, scaffolding, bucket truck, and staging at various heights.
