| Director of Finance and Administration St. James’ Church seeks an experienced and analytical Director of Finance & Administration to serve at our Episcopal parish located at 865 Madison Avenue and 71st Street in Manhattan. The position reports to the Rev. Brenda G. Husson, Rector. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 10 years experience, including supervisory experience, as a manager in non-profit, governmental, academic and/or corporate settings. He/she must be able to serve as a trusted advisor to the Rector in management matters, characterized by integrity, wisdom, and discretion. The candidate must develop a deep commitment to the mission, values and culture of St. James’ Church, without the expectation that he/she join the Church. The candidate must have strong communications skills, coupled with the ability to establish and maintain collegial and productive working relationships with Clergy, Staff, Lay Leaders and parishioners. Principal responsibilities include the following: FINANCE - Oversee cash management, anticipating payroll, payables, and receivables
- Interpret financial information and provide updates, details, and context as needed
- Deliver actuals vs. budget reports monthly, and year-end projections on an annual basis
- Supervise Accounting Manager and Administrator for Stewardship & Operations in facilitating day-to-day operations of tracking, reporting, invoicing, and payments. Aid the management of their workflow, stay close to their productivity, and check the accuracy and timeliness of their output.
- Assess, manage and minimize risk in facilities, HR matters, and financial controls
- Oversee audit and tax functions, report to Audit Committee and follow up on any findings
- Oversee annual insurance renewal/re-marketing, make and manage any insurance claims
- Track investments in partnership with Investment Committee & outside asset manager
- Serve as valued member of Stewardship Working Group
- Attend and present financials at monthly Vestry Meetings
ADMINISTRATION Facilities - Supervise Property Manager
- Oversee building operations and maintenance
- Contract for, oversee, and follow up property rentals and space use
- Provide project management of capital projects
- Manage and upgrade Information Technology infrastructure, including network, Wi-Fi, telecommunications, fire-safety and security systems, HVAC and building management systems, accounting and membership databases.
Human Resources - Administer HR policy, compensation, payroll administration and employee benefit plans, including health, pension, and clergy housing.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS - Advanced degree in accounting, business, finance or related field, or equivalent experience
- Exceptional numerical proficiency and analytic skills
- Excellent communication skills — both written and verbal
- Strong leadership and managerial skills
