JOB SUMMARY

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Shared Services is seeking a Facilities Manager 1 to ensure the smooth operation of a multi-building portfolio and act as a liaison between the building occupants and Facilities Operations. Under the direction of the Director of Facility Services, the candidate must have a strong understanding of both building systems and building programs within assigned areas, as well as the impacts of each upon the other. The successful candidate will work to ensure the functional integrity of teaching and research programs during the course of necessary maintenance and repairs to the building's infrastructure.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Serves as main contact for building occupants for all maintenance and repair issues.
  • Walk assigned buildings regularly to monitor condition.  Report maintenance or cleaning needs to proper staff through prescribed methods.   
  • Assist building occupants with submitting work orders to Facilities as needed.
  • Coordinate with Facilities and University personnel to give them access to space when requested.
  • Work with faculty and staff to evaluate building problems.
  • Respond to building emergencies when contacted. Serves as primary emergency contact 24 hours a day throughout the year, including semester breaks, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for building security, including maintenance of keys and electronic security systems; monitoring and interacting with Building Management System.
  • Assists with deliveries and returns.
  • Installs some laboratory equipment when requested.
  • Has knowledge of University's CMMS system (AiM).
    • Monitors the progress of building occupant work orders and communicates with requestors as needed.
    • Communicates with the appropriate Facilities staff when critical work in assigned buildings is incomplete.
  • Serves as liaison to Fire & Police Departments, Facilities and Grounds, Transportation, and other university departments to facilitate responses to emergencies and safety issues.
  • Purchase materials and supplies for maintenance and renovation projects as necessary, maintains standing contracts with vendors when applicable.
  • Prepares rooms for occupancy after renovations or major repairs occur.
  • Serves as member of assigned CLAS committees.
Laboratory Safety
  • Serves as troubleshooter for problems that arise regarding safety of building or laboratory facilities.
  • Remain up to date on University safety training.
  • Department contact for Office of Environment, Health and Safety
  • Understand hazardous material safety guidelines per University protocols
  • Assists in chemical/solvent deliveries as necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned by the College.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Five to ten years of experience and demonstrated skill in a variety of trades including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and broad knowledge of mechanics
  • Supervisory ability
  • Sound knowledge of structural design
  • General abilities with the Microsoft office suite, particularly with Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to work with faculty members, staff, and students
  • Driver's license (ability to drive university vehicles)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field of study or a combination of education and experience
  • Experience in specifying and purchasing parts or equipment
  • Experience working in an academic or laboratory/research setting
  • Understanding and minor maintenance of: water purification systems, laboratory hoods, and electronic locksets
