Facilities Management (FM) provides maintenance, grounds, and custodial services to the entire campus. FM serves as a partner within the zone structure for the Contract Colleges (CC), Endowed (EN), and Student and Campus Life (SCL) zones.

he Facilities Management Division of Cornell University is seeking a motivated and hard working individual to join our team as a Shift Maintenance Mechanic!
The successful candidate chosen to fill this role will respond to all facilities related trouble calls, including emergency calls. Plan to act independently to assess situations, troubleshoot problems, and take appropriate actions. It's important that the SO-11 Shift Maintenance Mechanic acts with the authority to call trades people in on overtime for assistance or repair and, when necessary, will alert building occupants and others to potentially dangerous conditions. This person also provides support and assistance to members of the Cornell community who are experiencing facility related problem situations (e.g. locked out of room or stuck in an elevator). This role requires documentation and recording of all maintenance activities and related billable hours for equipment maintenance records. You will also perform routine and preventive maintenance on facilities equipment as well as troubleshoot and maintain:
building heating systems (i.e. boilers, burners, electric, and university steam)
cooling systems (i.e. package units, chillers, and university chilled water)
other mechanical and HVACR equipment found in commercial, industrial, residential, and research facilities.
This position is covered by the United Auto Workers (UAW) bargaining unit. The starting hourly rate of pay is $24.92.
You will need the ability to work a rotating 12-hour shift. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays) to meet seasonal work demand.
Shift differential may apply per union contract.
What we need:
As a Shift Mechanic you will need a High School diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five years' experience in building trades or other relevant mechanical experience.
The position also requires:
A thorough understanding of facilities systems and equipment
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, as well as excellent customer service skills
Experience working in a team environment to accomplish goals required.
Ability to learn and maintain a working knowledge of the entire campus and building systems.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, tech manuals and detailed work instructions.
Ability to use common test equipment such as multi-meters, tension meters, alignment tools etc.
Excellent troubleshooting skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC, utilities, controls, and other support systems in a high technology environment.
Demonstrated ability to use computers. Must be able to lift and/or move 100lbs. Ability to work in confined spaces.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and deliver heavy material to workers.
Ability to ascend and descend heights and have agility and freedom of movement. Climbs stairs and ladders.
Able to move easily in confined spaces. Must be able to wear a respirator.
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods as well as exposure to extreme dust, dirt and insects, including bees.
Preferred but NOT REQUIRED:
Experience with the MAXIMO Computerized Maintenance Management System.
