The Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), as the preeminent design school in the world, offers a unique setting for interaction and the exchange of ideas through the combination of disciplines—architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design—together with an emerging research program and a robust public program of lectures and exhibitions. Works closely with the Director responsible for building operations, building systems/efficiency, capital projects, safety, security, maintenance, service, and budgets. The portfolio includes ~ 225,000 square feet, across 9 buildings. This role needs to be a capable back up across all functions for the Director and should have experience with complex building systems and capital projects.
Excellent communication and leadership abilities to motivate a strong team, anticipate evolving needs/regulations/requirements, deliver superior service, and manage expectations for a broad community of constituents.
Work closely with Harvard Environmental Health & Safety, Maintenance, Dining to define and meet the needs of the GSD community.
Partners with Building Services Manager, who oversees custodial and security, to maintain a collaborative and well-coordinated team.
Deliver clear feedback and set priorities for team members.
Ensure that operations staff have the proper training, guidance, and knowledge to keep pace with changing technologies.
Establish and oversee processes needed for maintenance, emergency repairs, safety program and renovations.
Optimize building automation systems – balancing budget, comfort, and best practices.
Monitor safety compliance, coordinate inspections, and ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
Work closely with Harvard University Office for Sustainability to implement best operating and maintenance practices, and to actively advance GSD greenhouse gas and energy reduction efforts.
Monitor and prioritize projects and work orders.
Develop long range maintenance plans and capital investment plans in partnership with GSD Finance, Harvard Capital Planning and other Harvard and GSD stakeholders.
Continually review/audit facilities to anticipate future needs.
Administer and populate project management systems.

8+ years of progressive work experience managing technically sophisticated facilities.
Experience with relevant technology and software (MS Excel, Word, Email, Scheduling, Work Order System, HVAC Controls, Security Access Controls).
Excellent decision making and organizational skills.
Must be highly skilled in written and verbal communications and able to work well with a wide variety of constituents.
Solid knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations for operating a facility in an urban area and in a learning environment.
BA/BS -- facilities, construction, engineering, or architecture preferred.
