LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Skilled Maintenance Mechanic to join its team. LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.

This position will be a part of the Facilities Group maintenance staff and report to the Facilities Team Lead. The maintenance staff is responsible for all of the day to day maintenance and repair of the entire Observatory and support buildings. This position requires an understanding of and compliance with cleanroom protocols and laser safety procedures. The successful candidate will work under general supervision and will be required to use a variety of tools and techniques of facilities maintenance services to work on semi-routine assignments where good judgment is required to properly maintain the LIGO buildings and site and ensure that they are in proper working order and safe.
The work location is at the LIGO Livingston Observatory, near Livingston, Louisiana.
Perform routine support and maintenance functions including, but not limited to, minor plumbing, electrical, HVAC and chilled water systems.
Diagnose and repair various facilities equipment.
Applies basic skills in mechanical maintenance and selects from standard procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and equipment appropriate to accomplish tasks.
Provide troubleshooting and rapid, on-call response to facilities equipment failures.
Communicating clearly, in both written and verbal form with co-workers, and via computerized maintenance management interfaces.
High School/GED or Trade School diploma with a minimum of 3-5 years of full time, general maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience carrying out maintenance of chilled water systems.
Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods, tools and equipment in any of the following areas, as required: plumbing, electricity, HVAC, locks, carpentry, painting and general maintenance.
Experience working on job site(s) that employ formal safety procedures and a strong safety culture.
Flexible schedule to accommodate after hours and weekend emergencies. Able to work independently in those situations.
Experience in industrial and construction environments involving work at height, climbing ladders, moderate lifting, working near operating machinery, exposure to noise, and wearing appropriate personal protection devices.
Must have a valid driver's license at the time of employment and be able to maintain it throughout the course of employment.
Extensive mobility as well as the ability to kneel, crouch, crawl and climb to reach items in need of repair. Must be able to stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours per day) and to perform the following physical activities: bending, climbing step ladders and stairs, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling, stooping and kneeling.
Have received OSHA-certified training for one or more of these: fire safety & evacuation, personal protective equipment, fall protection, lock out/tag out, hot work, blood borne pathogens, ladder safety, electrical safety, hazard communications, back safety, environmental health and safety; and/or Certified to use heavy machinery such as a fork truck, scissor lift, scaffolding, manlift and overhead cranes.
Experience operating and maintaining vacuum or ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment, such as pumps, instrumentation, leak detectors, purge/vent system, bake ovens, and large gate valves.
Experience executing routine system performance checks and calibration of vacuum instrumentation and equipment.
Experience performing engineering calculations and analysis applied to vacuum or HVAC.
Experience in planning and scheduling work tasks.
Experience working in clean rooms, and/or following clean room protocols.
Experience working in an academic or laboratory setting.
Experience working in a diverse team from a broad range of backgrounds and areas of expertise.
